So I sold the XR125 and got a hornet, signed up with a different insurance company, told them my NCB is 3 years as was stated on the renewal papers I received from my old insurance provider (policy was due for renewal August 4th).

A few days later I got a letter from my current insurance company saying I need to cancel the old policy (which I had left to lapse as it's only a few more days left) in order to get proof of my NCB for them.

Problem is if I cancel now, the b*stards will say I've only got 2 years NCB rather than 3 (cause of 1 week difference!!), which means I'll have to pay more.

Wondering whether I should cancel and pay or ignore their letter until the old policy lapses and I can get proof of 3 years NCB. The latter says I need to provide the NCB proof 'soon', no deadline mentioned...

Without being a bastard over this a years no claims means a year (except for eBike who are freaks) without making a claim - not 51 weeks.

Insurance companies are sticklers for detail at the est of times, why did you think they wouldn't be now?

Right now I've got that off of my chest.

Call your old company, tell them the policy you currently holdwith them will be lapsing on August 4th (please god don't tell me you told them you sold the bike) and that you require proof of no claims for your new insurers on August 5th.

Don't mention you've sold the bike, or you are on a new one or anything else - just that you require proof of no claims on August 5th

In the meantime your new insurers will send you a letter stating your insurance will lapse from **/**/** if they haven't recieved proof of no claims by then.

So it isn't anything to worry about just yet.

Cancel your new policy which you can do without penalty up to 14 days of buying it provided there are no claims on it. Get a new policy which will be good for another 14 days, by which you should have you NCB papers (hopefully).

Pedantically you may still have a problem as at the time of policy commencement, you technically only have 2 years NCB (notwithstanding the renewal notice). Insurance may try to wrangle this if you do have to make a claim (they will know as the NCB notice will show the end date of your previous policy). If you have the energy, you could string them along for a couple of 14 days cooling off period policy segments until your NCB is legit ie book, pay, cancel, refund and repeat.

Generally subject to a minimum premium of £50 plus IPT.

Ring your new insurers and say you dont have 3 years NCB until a few days into your new policy so can you have your new policy incepted on nil bonus with your 3 years bonus added to your policy when the old policy expires. In theory you will just be paying a few extra quid for having your new policy on nil bonus for a few days.

Not on my policy - if you are going to cancel go for the ones with the favourable cancellation policies - money is no object if you get it all back... Wink

I'm fine with them being picky on the year's no claims, but I think it's taking the p*ss that I should miss out on a whole year because of one weak. If they were really interested in detail, it would 2 years and 11 months maybe.

I already tried asking for proof of no claims (without mentioning I sold the bike), and they (ebike) said they can't give me that until the policy ends or is canceled.

Just send them a copy of the renewal notice.
I had this problem with bennetts when i changed my bike i was blowed if i was going to pay a £30 admin charge to change details for the month that was left. So i started a new policy and left the old running, saying the same as you that i had X no claims. They then came back saying they wanted proof. I rang them told them to check their records as the old policy was through them as well.... Still got a letter asking for details, as i had called them i ignored it. Not always a good idea. I then got a 2nd on the same matter then a week later one saying thanks for the info on my no claims..... Cost them more to send the letters out and chase me.

I did send a copy of the renewal notice, but they still rang up my old insurer to check and unless the old policy is canceled or lapses, the old insurer will not confirm the NCB. I'm just going to ignore them and hope they don't chase this again for another week.

But have you tried to make a claim with slightly iffy details?

Generally however, I've found most insurance companies are fairly happy to be flexible in such matters.

Personally, I'd just tell them you've sent "oh, it didn't get through? I'll send it again".

They usually leave it some time before they do start to get really arsey and offer you lots of chances to sort it.
I had similar problems where it was a month or two before I sent proof through thanks to my old company claiming they had faxed the details off and the new company claiming they never received them.
