I have just fitted 2 new front LED indicators and have LED indicators with inline resistors at the rear

with the engine off the indicators are a solid constant light

with the engine on its the same, just light

but if i rev it to over 2000 revs they will flash!

What i think is happening is that there is not enougth power from the battery but when revving the alternator is stepping in providing the correct current!

So is it that my battery is not powerful enougth to power the new indicators? If so will charging it solve the problem?

or

Do i need to buy a new battery with a higher output of current?

Lower value resistors should cure it. Put a voltmeter on the battery to see if it's dragging the voltage down beforehand.

That's what i'm thinkin', my indicators only worked when i revved, charged the battery and it sorted it.

I'm certain it's your battery.

Get it properly recharged or buy a new one.

If that fails, time to look at your alternator...

Don't buy a new battery yet. Start your engine and put a voltmeter up to your battery, have it set on anything above about 20v dc. Take a reading for when it's idling, then with the lights on, then revving it, then with the horn etc etc. It should never drop below about 13-14v. If it does you have a problem with either your alternator/generator or your regulator/rectifier. I'd then suggest having it checked out by your local bike mechanic.

If it's holding the battery at that charge then either you have something that's draining the battery when the ignition's off (like an alarm) or the battery is indeed stuffed.

right im not an electrician so i not 100 percent confident on what im doing electric wise but i had a go:

I put a voltimeter on V-... 20 placed it on the battery terminals withe ignition off and it read 12.2

put the lights on 11.49

ignition droped to 8 then back up to 12.2

so is the battery underpowered? im presuming that you think i need a 15v one? so will a charge fix it or do i need a replacement?

[EDIT] Just checked the battery there is no indication on of the voltage it should be!
[EDIT] The battery should is 12V
[EDIT]According to the book you need a 12V battery!

So do i need a bigger battery?

Cheers Guys

Most batteries are 12 volt (some 6v). What voltage is across the terminals of the battery when the bike is running, if the voltage does not increase above 13/14 volts then you probably have a charging problem and the battery may be fine, if the voltage does rise then it will probably be your battery is failing.

14.29v to me is a good output, usually charging circuits are regulated to avoid damaging batteries and circuits (light bulbs etc.) from too high a voltage, run the bike for a while, or fit a charger to the battery, then disconnect the battery, check the voltage across the terminals, leave it for a while and check the voltage again, do this a few times. If the voltage keeps on dropping then your battery cannot hold a decent charge and should be replaced. If the voltage gets below around 11.5/12v (while disconnected) then again the battery sounds like it is failing.
