If you get caught without your bike restricted and its proved you will be done for driving without a license and insurance. Which equals a ban. Happy?

Interesting - I'm not so sure about this as I remember a traffic copper saying on another forum that in situations like this (or something else that could 'invalidate' the insurance like undeclared modifications) although the insurance company could refuse to cover the damage to your vehicle if it's comprehensively insured, they cannot get out of third party liability, although they might try and recover their costs from you.

Not sure how true this is however, just what I heard from one source.

Whats the chance of even being caught?

Well the more you ride like a knob, the higher the chance of getting a pull by the police and quizzed about it.

Out of interest do you know exactly how they tested your bike? was it just an inspection by a police vehicle examiner or did they dyno it?

Depends on the bike too.... if its one of the newer ECU bikes it takes about 10 seconds to see if ure on full power or 33bhp (it says on the side of the ECU) so they will more than likely have a look if they suspect.

On some of the older washer type restrictions they are more likely to not bother, but give them a reason and there gonna hunt to find something

Usually dyno, although I have heard of coppers just sticking their fingers through and feeling if the washers are there or not. can't see how you'd do that though. Thumbs Up

Not necessarily, if you have a 'new' bike restricted it doesn't mean that they have to change the ECU for one that will only allow 33bhp.

No thats true but some of the newer ones such as Suzukis sv650 and gsxr600 are ECU and they know that, so it wont take much to lift the seat and have a gander.

Doesn't mean anything though. Law say under 25kW (33hp). The lack of an obvious restrictor does not mean it is over 25kW. Sure they could dyno it, but they would have great difficulty dynoing it to produce a figure that complies with the relevanent definitions of 25kW (which is likely to be the EU definition of power, so a crank figure and measured at certain temperatures, etc).

For all they know, and for all it legally matters you could have restricted it by closing the plug gap on one cylinder and blanked off the fuel supply to it and drilling a hole in the piston as well (sure, would run like a dog).

All the best

Keith

They got Elva to take the bike. Had me send through details of the restriction - e.g. how it was restricted and then got a guy (who knows his stuff obviously) to take my tank off and fiddle about a bit. He manged to flood it too. Rolling Eyes

So they will quite happily go to all sorts of lengths to catch you out.

On a side note - if people wont ride like nutters when the bikes derestricted then whats the point in derestricting it? (i ride like a complete *insert insult here* even though im restricted - you dont need 100+ BHP to have fun).

Thumbs Up

I suspect you could just say "it's restricted, I don't know the specific details", but then of course they might just put it on a dyno.

To the 'OP'; sounds like you were very lucky for getting let off with no CBT.
Same might not happen again.

U can thank this guy for high insurance costs if ure anything under 25 years old

everyone bends the rules but thats takes the piss

Why? Has he crashed and made insurance claims?

The people that make insurance claims are the ones that put insurance premiums up; nothing to do with those that get fines.

Infact, those that get fines do pay higher insurance as they may be more likely to make a claim; meaning that the insurance company can charge those without slightly less.

Most people believe the amount they bend the rules is fine, but those that do more than they personally do is not.

That is exactly what I thought they would have done, I have personally never known the police to have a vehicle dyno'd to prove its power output one way or another. The guy who will have examined it will have been a 'proper' Police Vehicle Examiner whos job is to know all about inspecting vehicles for evidence purposes etc.
