I tried to put new fork seals on my Honda NSR125R yesterday and thought I had managed OK. I looked at it today and there's loads of oil coming from under the dust seals and I don't know what I did wrong.

Could I have put the seals on upside down? I put them on so that I couldn't see the spring ring. Is this right? I know that the copper bushes are fucked and I've ordered some more but Honda have told me it might take a month to get them so I've had to put the old ones back on.

What might I have done wrong?

Were they genuine honda seals?

My bike is a nsr125rx which isn't listed but it's 1999 and it says they would fit 1992 to 2003 so it thought they would be OK. They just came in a plastic bag - no box or name.

You reckon the seals are to blame?

I assume that when it says ATF in the Haynes manual it means automatic transmission fluid. I have used Dexron II type. Is this right and is the specialised fork oil they sell in Halfrauds any better?

All the forks seals I have changed go in with the roll spring facing up( thats not to say yours should may be quick ring to your local honda dealer to find out) I have also aways used proper fork oil.

Has anyone else done fork seals on NSRs - there must be a few of you. Which way up did you put the seals?

ive done it on 2 nsrs a cb a tzr an rd and kh and the spring ALWAYS goes face down

how did you press the seals in? even the slightest little nick caused by incorrect methods of fitting will have oil pissing out

i did it with a bit of steel tube that was in my garage. What are you supposed to use? i can't really afford expensive tools.

you need to use something that fits perfect to the outer edge of the seal and press it in straight, i use a socket as i have one that fits 100% perfect and just "very" gently tap the seal in with palm of my hand,

They could be, they might not be exactly the correct size (difference might not even be big enough to notice by the eye)

certain bikes (Honda Bros for example) just dont like any other seals bar Genuine Honda ones.

Absolute rubbish. I've owned 7 or 8 Bros's and always used after market seals.

Chances are the bushes need replacement, they normally do as no one bothers to do it, except me. Ask Itchy about the difference it made to his forks.

Yeah - I've got bushes on order from Honda but they could take a month. I've got my MOT coming up on the 15th and there's no chance of it passing in its current state.

Is it safe to ride like this?

not really recommended, without oil theres no damping making your front end very soft and liable to dip sharply if you hit a bump in the road or jam your front brake on

Hmm ... interesting. It was a well respected mechanic that old me this. Said he'd tried a number of seals in the bros and the only ones he found that worked properly were OEM ones.

Riding with a fork seal that has been leaking a lot of oil is liable to cause you to lock you front wheel when you hit a bump under braking....

not only that, but fork oil is an excellent lubricant so when it gets over your brakes it reduces their stopping power to around the zero mark.
