Hi guys, just bought an '88 VFR 400 NC24 last night and it seems to be really good.

I noticed that when you engage first gear when the bike is cold, it stalls but as soon as the bike warms up then there is no problem. What causes this, can anything be done?

Also when you put the steering lock on, the rear lights stay on, why?

Any help would be fantastic.

P.S. If anyone could point me in the direction of a good manual, that's be great.

It's probably just cold oil in between the clutch plates sticking them together. I get a similar thing on my VFR750 when its cold, although it doesn't actually stall. Try revving the engine slightly as you put it into gear.

As above for the stalling, most bikes do it. Try putting it in gear and rocking it forwards first. Then start it as usual.

As for the lights, are you sure your not putting the parking lights on when you do the steering lock? Its only one more position round on the ignition than the lock on its own.

I'll have to check the lights issue when I get home, but iy sounds possible.

Even though Haynes only do a manual for the NC30, I'm sure someone on here said that they're pretty much the same bike, the only way you'd notice is if you did a full engine rebuild. Anyone reckon it's worth it? £13.55 + Free delivery.

Another thing I forgot, are the indicators wired up so that they come, sort of like sidelights. They're only like this with the front indicators.

Change the oil
Change clutch cable adjustment, biting point should be in the middle of lever travel
Adjust clutch freeplay

It should made quite a loud noise going N-1 in the morning, but stalling?

I'm just wondering if the clutch is dragging a little bit.

Gonna get the Haynes manual even though it's for an NC30, just to give me some idea of how things are supposed to be.

It shouldnt be the clutch. If you buy a paddock stand and put the bike into gear whilst its on the stand and hold the clutch in. If the wheel spins then it is dragging but its ok when warm so it should be ok.

Also your chain tension needs to be adjusted as you should lube the chain. Thumbs Up

Aye, I remember you saying that when I got it. A paddock stand is a good idea, just need some pennies first.

Me and my mate Richie (djrichieb) had a look at my VFR again and the whole thing with the steering lock also switching the parking lights on is sorta solved, we yanked the fuse out. Lol.

Haven't had a chance to check if the clutch is dragging yet, I haven't put the petrol tank back on the bike and have no paddock stand.

NC24 eh. You're in for a whole world of pain with this one, I speak from experience. I hope it was incredibly cheap.

The clutch thing is quite normal on a bike that has been standing for a while, and will go away with use. The clutch plates are sticking together a bit. If you rev it a bit while you clunk it into first it won't stall.

What do you mean a whole world of pain?

I paid less than £600 for it.

World of pain? Nout wrong with the bike and for a bike of this again (88 model first reg'ed in 95) it runs and rides great.

So the NC24 doesnt have the suspension of the NC30 but it still seems comfy enough and a good first bike for the price it was bought for.

Only problem i have really heard of with the NC24 from all of the owners i know is the calipers sticking on but thats not really a major problem.
