Got about 3 miles home sitting at traffic light and bike is idling over nicely and then it goes " rummmmmm TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP" so i turn it of quick as possible and push it up on to side of road while being sworn at by some tosser in a fuck off bus because he couldn't get past, sodding steep curve and i weight less than 10 stone and did the fucker couldn't get out and sodding help NOOOOOOO. then i have a look around remove a few panels ( had tool kit) and cant find anything though fan ( hoping Rolling Eyes ) gave up as decided i was kidding my self and it was something major.

rang my dad not in got 30min+ before he gets home and sodding my phones going into one with low credit so i had to ring my mum to ring my dad until he got in. Eventually after 45min of freezing my nadjers off and scratching my head got a call back and my dad was on route. But didn't have the trailer. Then had to wait 10min for him to get to me and we pushed it home 4 freaking miles of hills of wet leafy footpaths. !!! IN THE RAIN!!!!!!!!! then had to go all the way back on the dt to pick up his car!!!!! ARRRRRRR its been a bad day. And apart front he fact i think its going to cost me a fortune i was going to put it up for sale last week and didn't Evil or Very Mad AND its my sodding birthday tomorrow!!!!

Moan over.!!!! Bad day. Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad

Happy Birthday.

The interesting sound may have been your camchain tensioner giving up, when the tensioner gave up on ginger_one's bike I think he described it as a rattling/tapping noise, basically meaning the chain isn't tensioned so it slaps around on the edges of its tunnel. Seeing as you stopped the engine sharpish, you should be able to get away with just putting in a new tensioner.

Not sure what the procedure is on the CBR6, but on the CB250 a tensioner cost 25 quid, and you just had to get the cylinder head off and take out the old one and pop in the new one pretty much.

If it wasn't that it could have been something like a valve dropping and hitting a piston. If you get the head off you can see.

Of course, don't do a thing until Keith reads this and says i'm wrong.

Hi

Happy birthday anyway.

Robby could well be right that it could be the cam chain tensioner. This alone is not a major problem. Eventually the chain can wear through the engine casing, but realistically that is not going to be a problem without several weeks / months use. If the chain gets too loose then it can jump on allowing the cam timing out which could easily get expensive. In other word if it is the cam chain / tensioner then then chances are that you have got away with it.

Cam chains when they are worn / loose these make a slapping noise.

A loud tapping noise could be other things, such as a failed valve adjuster (eg, rocker broken, shim broken up). This is probably not serious just a pain to fix.

A knock is often a sign of a shot big end bearing. A popping sound / cracking sound would probably be the head gasket but then I think the CBR engine would not blow the head gasket that way and would just land up pressurising the cooling system (no real direct path from the combustion chamber to the outside world without going through the water jacket).

If it is a real nasty noise then there are numerous things it could be (eg, dropped valve, broken piston, snapped rod), including clutch problems (does the noise change when you pull / release the clutch?).

I would say take the bodywork off and whip off the rocker cover. Then have a look at how much free play there is in it. Try checking the cam timing marks all line up correctly. Check the valve operation (neighbours Nova suddenly went onto 3 cylinder which turned out to be a snapped rocker which was a bit of a surprise to notice). Do a compression check.

I do have a CBR600 workshop manual at home but it is for the early shape ones. Not sure how similar the engines are.

All the best

Keith

cheers for all the advice
Realy dont think its that major. it is a very loud CLICKING noise realy i supose.

Changed the cam chain my self about 2 months ago and tensioner seemed algiht but only take 2 tick to whip off and have a gander so will look at that as well.

Going to whip the rocker cover off and check around then plus check compression.

Other thing i thought that perhaps the water pump chain has snaped/ come off.

~Also the clutch has always made a slight noise but never anything major. Sad

Not a problem have a few bikes and not a problem fixing things just will tae me awhile as i am well bissy atm.

Cheers fo rthe Happy birthdays lads. At uni course work due Sad so not great so far but working up to greater things at the weekend

Maybe for christmas someone will buy you some aa cover, then you just need to sort out getting it a mile away from your house and get them to fix it for you? I had to push my ped when my clutch went and it seemed quite heavy, i'd hate to have to push anything bigger, good luck with the bike and stuff!
