After a trip to the local mechanics today.

Turns out the rear tyre is "square" Confused

I thought something had to be really wrong with the bike because i could get round the local twistys faster on my old dtr than i can on the cb5.

When i fell off it i must have been leaning too much, then by the time i got past the square part of the tyre i was leaning far too much, and that along with the extremely slippy road i was on at the time is what could have caused e to come off.

(Yes it could also have been a lack of skill Laughing )

Anyway,it looks like ill have to change the rear tyre.
Its got a bridgestone BT45 on there now, should i stick with that or try something else??

I have no idea what the BT45 bit means, whats the difference??
Rough prices?

Thanks

Dave

"BT45" is the model of tyre.

I have Bridgestone BT45's on my divvy and I find that they're a good tyre for the money. Good grip in the dry and the wet and they tend to last me a fair few thousand miles Thumbs Up

Thumbs up from me Thumbs Up

EDIT: They usually cost me £165 for the pair including fitting (ride in, ride out)

Had them on my city fly, seem good enough to me, although I changed the other one after it started to square off slightly and I was down the minimum depth in the middle but not the sides . Mad

Thanks for the reply m8 Thumbs Up

I've got no confidence going into corners the way it is at the moment.

My own fault i spose,i should have took it straight to a garage when i bought the bike to get it checked out Sad .

(Just like to note,im not having a go at the bloke i bought it off.He probably didnt know about the tyres or the head bearings.I think i got a good deal off him anyway and he delivered it about 300 miles for me...top bloke Thumbs Up )

Im looking forward to getting it back on the twistys when its all fixed to see how much better it is. Laughing

So is it normal for tyres to go square ??
Or is it because its been ridden like a tart:lol: ? Too many motorway miles maybe?

new tyres have a shiny finish on them thats slippery as fuck! theres a vid that i cant find of some kid on a brand new GSXR K7, opening it up a bit, and coz the tyres are new and slippery, he bins it!

you need to wear them down a bit to get past the shiny slippery layer.

He might be, but if he is, then he is offering very stupid advice.

You do need to 'wear in' your tyres. Normal riding making you slowly increase your lean angle a little at a time is fine.

Sandpaper will leave small particles of sand in your tyres, which will cause further damage.
A burnout will only wear in the centre, which is rarely where the problem is.

Yes, too many motorway miles will cause your tyre to square off.

Squared off tyres come from doing loads of miles with the bike upright (motorways, fast dual carriageways, general commuting) and from laying down the power hard when pulling away.

Personally, and i dont think im alone here i reckon for any of the 500 class the BT45 is the best tyre... Stick with them, get a new BT45 put on the rear and get ready to feel the difference...

Dont put sandpaper anywhere near your tyres btw, just ride gently for around 50/100 miles (I reckon you only NEED around 10 miles of a twisty road but to be on the safe side...)

Most tyres have a shiney coating when new and can be quite slippy untill they are slightly worn... hence the sandpaper... but just get out and ride once you got the new rubber...

Lots of motorway miles cause square tyres as you are just using the centre of the tyre. Twisty lanes help to wear the tyre all over

Once you get new tyre, be careful for about 50 - 100 miles, until shiny surface is worn off, then have fun, it will have a totally different feel then and maybe you will have more confidence on the corners. Thumbs Up
