too easy to call these people bad muslims when it actually comes down to the laws and customs of the country. I wish i could say it was unbelievable but i have witnessed much worse situations while i lived over there, our government are well aware of the appalling human rights women in particular have over there but still maintain we are allies, oil has nothing to do with it right?

now clearly she broke the law and the punishment she received is pretty much the norm over there however unless she has a very liberated family she under normal circumstances would be expected to commit suicide to ensure no shame was brought on her family.

Any non-secular state is a recipe for human-rights violations of the highest order.
Saudi is no exception. It really bugs me how buddy-buddy we are with them.
In 'Islamic' run countries women rarely report rape for this very reason. Adultery can be punished by death, so if a woman reports a rape, admits sex took place, but did not consent, then she simply HAS to win the case. If she doesn't she's in deep shit.

Yes it's shit.

must be something to do with the 9bn business deals and the bribes to NL, which ineffect ordered the serious fraud office to stand down.

So its in breading all round then........

This seems to have got passed the joke stage, how can they blame her.... Not like she will have been wandering around in a boob tube and micro mini skirt, on 6 inch heels.....

Some of their punishments make more sense than ours, but not this one.

After being in a MODERATE Muslim state for the past five months I can say that not all Muslims are bad, nor is the religion as oppressive as we like to think over in the west.

However, Malaysia has a strong Multicultural base and the Chinese run the country economy (more or less). If the state was to become hard line then they would loose their economy.

Saudi Arabia is a corrupt nation that has oil resources that means no western nation would dare condemn them or stop doing business with them.

It ultimately boils down to money and resources IMO. In the Malaysian government there is a constant struggle between Islamic supporters who want more control, more Sharia law, where as the moderates realise how detrimental this would be for their country.

Aint going to do it more than twice now are they....
They are far harsher on any criminal activity. Like these guys are now in for life and that will mean life.... Not the 6 years they would have served here.

The details of this case have been confused a lot, the woman was sentenced to be lashed because she got into a car with a man who was not her husband or her relative. The person she got into the car with was not one of the rapists and was actually also raped as well. The people who raped them were sentenced to 10 years in jail.

If you ask me this case has highlighted what it is actually like to live under the Saudi regime, if they had not been raped the woman would still have been sentenced to be lashed for getting into the car and no one would have noticed or cared.

The outrage from Western newspapers is mainly based on the idea that it is inhumane to punish someone for what we would perceive as such a trivial crime (and not even a crime at all in our society) when that person has suffered so horrifically.

I was aware of the laws before i posted it, however, my point was, the fact that she had been raped should really have been punishment enough and then some, a decree of common sense should prevail, (a bit like when the police here decided it was pointless charging my partner for speeding and not wearing a seatbelt while he was fighting for his life in hospital) when you are dealing with sharia.
the latest example of this is the teacher in Sudan, whilst some would say ignorance is not an excuse, the muslim communites must be wringing their hands at the thought that extreme sharia beliefs has yet again bulldozed their attempts to get non believers to see that islam is an acceptable way of life. what people dont seem to realise is, only muslims are ruled by sharia law, the koran states that.

The Old testament of the Christian bible would have people stoning women to death who were raped in a built up area (because they obviously didn't cry out) but not those who were raped in the countryside (because they weren't heard crying out). Even the Jews managed to wise-up a bit when it came to some of these and treat the religious 'laws' with a pinch of salt.

The Islamic laws were written in a similar era and culture. Some of them simply weren't thought through very well or are wholly inappropriate for modern life. The trouble being that they are considered to be the word of god and as such can't be changed.

Islam is also a more recent religion than Judaism and Christianity but they will get the idea eventually. Islam is at roughly the same age where Christians were burning heretics at the stake and going on crusades. All this uproar is simply history repeating itself. Give it 100 years or so and they'll start fighting amongst themselves.

Ahh. That's a good sign then because the next stage after internal warring is petty bickering and political machinations.
