Ok i'm starting to dislike windows after years of using it then buying a mac laptop this year i'm finding xp frustrating.

I want to install linux on my other laptop and have a few quick questions.

1)Will i be able to install Linux without removing XP and without losing data.

2)Will i be able to access the files on my C: drive from inside linux?

Yes and yes.

See the webpage for the distribution you're interested in for info on how to do it. You need to be confident in resizing partitions.

You can dual boot linux and windows, and yeh you can access everything you want off the windows part of the drive. You will need a partition for the linux though.

Erm in regards to it being fast/not being a pain in the ass.. erm.. good luck with that.

When you get used to it its easy enough to do, but its very backwards and I hope you enjoy using dos cause thats pretty much how linux works.

As N30 is hinting, Linux isn't going to be the dream you're after, but I'd still encourage you to learn how to use it.

It'll take months before you find out how to do everything you can in XP with it though.

Have you gone through the crack-install process of maya 7?
Tis a chore.

If linux isn't the bridge between xp and os x i was hoping for then i may not bother, looks cool though, the multiple workspaces etc.

best thing to do

download a LIVE cd of your choice of Linux Distro

If you want easy, then use an UBUNTU live cd.

you pop it into your cd drive, reboot your PC, it'll then boot live from the cd without needing to install anything to your hard drive.

then you can get a small taste of how Linux works.

don't forget, all your .exe files will not work under Linux.

some of them you can run if you use an app called Wine.

you can still use firefox as that's been ported over.
msn is a no no . Linux has it's own version called Kmess etc. etc.
