A week or so ago, i noticed the power valve acting funny when i turned on the ignition. Instead of making one movement, it makes loads, opening and closing. At least that's what it sounds like. I don't know if it continues after it is started but it does feel very lumpy sometimes. There's a definate power increase at about 8000rpm so something is working right. Do you reckon the power valve is knackered, or could something else be at fault?

Another thing, i was filling up my bike in Swinton on friday and noticed the petrol looked a bit brown in colour, like rusty. Didn't seem quite right and my bike has been playing up even more since then. It struggles to idle with the choke off and if i'm at low revs (below 5000ish) and open the throttle, it just dies. Do you think it could be dodgy petrol?

I've got to ride from Chorley to Nottingham in an hour or so too. 100+ miles down the A6.

Joe

Perhaps your tank is rusting from the inside out and all the little bits of rust and shite are causing it to run rough? Check your fuel filter if your bike has one, if not fit one or at least drain and take a look at the tank once its empty.

it happens all the time when the services are at bottom of tanks and sometimes with a serious water % . i suggest several things
- your pulley unstability may come from a loose contact , check any connector (control unit,CDI)
- dismount tank , air box , carb and clean them . then adjust your pilot screw at 2 1/2 turns out and your needle at 2nd notch from top
- fit a NGK plug BR9EIX
- oil your valves cables with WD40 (dismount them from the pulley and make them moving)

** to clean your tank i've got a simple trick . dismount tap and lock . on a thin but strong string , tie big nuts with 3-4 inches separation , about 12 to 20 is enough . put your rosary in and move tank forcefully (you will hear the nuts) . when OK block the tap hole , 1 liter of petrol and rince . finish with o piece of cloth on a string

Power valve hunting like that could be because it's sticking somewhere in its travel.

Bad running could be the above or could be bad petrol. Have you tried draining some of the petrol from your tank into a clear jar to have a look at it.

The 'nuts necklace' is a great way of getting rid of rust in your tank. A dose of petseal after the treatment in order to stabilise the inside.

Thanks lads.

It's not my tank that's rusting though, i don't think. I noticed that the petrol coming from the nozzle was brown. I filled up today having used about half a tank of the shit stuff and it seems a bit better now its diluted. It was ridiculously smoky when i set off today, doesn't seem too bad now but i haven't tried it cold. I'll clean the filter and stuff next time i get chance.

I'll try having a look at the valve soon as well.

Thanks for your help.
