GS500e Clutch and my bad weekend.

I bought a '99 GS500e off ebay for £700. I road it from Whitsable in Kent to Hornchurch in Essex. I then road from Hornchurch to [s]Portsmouth[/s] Junction 9 of the M25

The clutch gave up after not even 200miles, left me stranded on the M25 freezing my bollocks off for an hour. I was heading to Portsmouth for a Christmas meal I had a tux in the top box. I was 2 hours late and missed the food but got a massive cheer from everyone as a walked in .

The tacho cable turned out to be a big problem as it had had the head of the engine side thread mullered. I had to remove the peice that the tacho screws into.

Saturday I spent trying to find somewhere nearby that had clutch plates for it. I finally got hold of someone that had a clutch kit for it and went along to see him, he said it was delivered by mistake he also had the peice that the tacho screws into!! He let me have the clutch kit and the tacho peice and a bar end for £30! So if you are looking for old bike parts check out R&D motorcycles in Southampton, the guy who runs it is really friendly and helpfull. He has a GS engine he is breaking.

We couldn't find a gasket Saturday so hoped we could use the old one or use liquid gasket. When we cracked her open we soon realised we wern't gonna use the old gasket it was broke in loads of places and firmly attached to both sides of the casing. Scraping gasket is the shittiest job ever especially when it is 1 degree out and you don't have a garage to work in. Anyway after dreading taking the clutch apart it turned out to be a fairly easy job, new plates went in and we tried using Instant gasket to make a seal. I started her and she pissed oil all over the place we took everything off and again and applied the gasket more liberally and started her again pissed oil out, again. I then read the packet, Instant gasket isn't as instant as it claims you need to wait 24 hours for it to harden .

At this point it was 5 o'clock, dark and cold. I couldn't move my fingers and I was unbelively angry. I had spent the night partying and didn't get in to about 5am and was up at 10 to start fixing the bike (didn't start till about 1 as I still felt spastic from the night before) I also had to be in London for my night shift at 11. Sorry for the rant but it feels good to vent, I had a excellent weekend planned and this heap ruined it. Still the party was awesome.

Clearly the inside hasn't been looked after the oil was black and frothy when it came out there was also a fair bit of clutch plate floating in it.

mine was in a similar shape, it still had ridges but was shot! shiney though! its easy to DIY and fast to do. took me 15 mins. Did you let the plates soak in fresh oil overnite? and take it easy for 100 miles or so to bed em. Thumbs Up
