PostPosted: 18:51 - 22 Dec 2007    Post subject: Identity theft...Ebay and Hotmail Reply with quote

I checked my hotmail earlier today. I had an email from Ebay saying someone had used my ebay username to list an item without my permission. The email told me to change my ebay password immediately, and also my hotmail password. I did both.

Now, a few hours later, i cannot log into hotmail or ebay with my new or old password. When clicking the 'forgotten password' (for msn) it asks me some questions to verify who i am, but for some strange reason the secret question is '第一个宠物的名字' (usually its something like 'what is your mothers maiden name', but now its just loads of quesion marks) I have tried putting in my mothers maiden name anyway, but with no luck.

What the hell is going on?

How did you change your password? did you go to the ebay website and do it from there or did you click a link from the email they sent you?

Do you have a copy of the email?

Did it start with Dear member?

I don't have a copy of the email.

I am not sure whether it started with Dear member, or Dear [my username]

- contact ebay
- cancel credit cards

Well i'm afraid you have just become a victim of identity fraud.
You need to get in touch with ebay asap, Good luck with that because they're bastards to email!. Also if your bank account is linked to a paypal account you need to speak to your bank right away.

Not really necessary.

They can't get your full card details from the ebay/paypal site.
Contacting ebay & paypal will get the account suspended and stop them using it to purchase items.
Anything that was purchased before and is not the OP's will have to be disputed/treated by Ebay/PP, and not the CC co or bank.
Stoping the cards is a idea, but is a major inconvience to the OP.

Talk to the bank/CC co and see what they say, but if you spoke to me the advice would be as above.
If the OP has a Direct debit set up then keep a close check on bank account and if anything is not theirs contact bank and get it returned.

Why do people always fall for the emails.......

FOR GODS SAKE ALWAYS USE A LINK FROM FAVORITES OR A URL YOU HAVE TYPED IN THAT YOU KNOW IS REAL.........
NEVER EVER FOLLOW A LINK IN A EMAIL, NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY LOOK

If they have stole your user ID --their is a possibilty they will have stuff listed in your name ie loads of mobile phones etc -- at giveway prices ---they can divert paypal payments from innocent buyers to their accounts and be gone in a few hours ....... so get into9uch with EBAY ---

Why oh Why do people fall for these emails ---yes of course they *look authentic* but you are told from the very start ebay do NOT ever ask you for your User name or details . I beleive they also use the *MESSAGE SERVICE* TO, AS OPPOSED TO EMAIL --SO YOU ALWAYS HAVE A COPY IN YOUR *MY eBAY* BIT
gOOD LUCK XX ooops cap-s

I have now got my hotmail and ebay accounts back.

To clear things up..i did not click the link in the email like i thought i did. The link in the email isn't even for changing passwords. Please see the attachment of the email. It must be 100% genuine, as its also in my inbox when logging into ebay. So, this email must not have been the culprit of my passwords being changed.

I have now changed every single password i can think of, using different ones for each. I also cancelled my debit/credit cards that were linked to paypal, so hopefully ive had a lucky escape.

Still curious as to how my ebay ID was used to list items though, without my permission.

Maybe a weak password then or a clever bit of spyware logging keystrokes.

Make a stronger password. Make it long, make it complex. Use capitals, numbers and symbols in it. If it's less than 12 figures, you aren't trying hard enough.

This doesn't mean it has to be difficult to remember. One I used to use was 4Asterisks****.

Happened to Shell about 2 weeks ago, exact same thing, she hadn't even used ebay for months, so it was some sort of scum that just found an account and hacked it.

a life time ago in university I once made a 32 digit password which consisted of no words and a seemingly random sequence of letters and numbers. Windows NT4 didn't like it one bit and most of my programs didn't start up at all.

You used to be able to use ANY key in your password on the logins when I started college. Including backspace.

I'm a fan of using numbers instead of letters, I'm not to positive on how secure it makes it but its harder for people to guess. So like 1 instead of an i 3 instead of an e 4 instead of an a etc.

Haha Laughing pretty much, the way I see it they probably don't tend to write word generators that operate in 1337 Wink.

There are loads of newbie password hackers that have just that button. TSGrinder was doing it 4 years ago.
