As there's an xmas theread I thought I'd post one for everyone who's not really into the whole xmas thing.

Like me.

So, I'm off to take down the decorations and tell kids all about how santa doesn't exist and the whole jesus thing is a work of fiction anyway.

Who's with me?

I wouldn't say its all that bad.
Every other relgion gets to do something so why not ourselves.

It gets us time of work for nothing, also means we have excuses to get fat and drink even more than we usually do.

Its just a time to over indulge in everything.
And i for once am looking forward to xmas dinner and all the food and drink. which is a first as i thought having family over would be the last thing i want. lol.

not to bothered about presents or anything.
Doesnt seem to have interested me this year.

Havent asked for anything and only brought a few things for the family.

Oh, I'm sorry, was this holiday about religion?

Being an atheist I never really noticed, always presumed it was something to do with big corporations making lots of money Confused.

The commercial christmas sucks mightily but any festival where you can gather your friends around you and celebrate whatever is near enough at the time gets my vote!

It could be worse we could all have been killed like those poor people in the mudslides a couple of days ago. I, myself, will be celebrating that tomorrow ...........

(if of course I get any sleep through the coughing and nose dribbling!!)

I'm an atheist too, and I think organised religion sucks.
(Its caused more wars than anything else ever!)

However Christmas is more about Santa Claus than Jesus and More about presents than the coming of the messiah.

As far as I'm concerned its a government sanctioned holiday so that you can see your family and give and receive tokens of affection. It has got a *little* out of hand though.

Any excuse to have a bit of time off of work! Smile

Christmas is the time of year that you get to see your family! (translation, you get dragged kicking and screaming to see those family members that you have got away with not seeing for twelve months! Evil or Very Mad )

I can remember getting all excited about it once, but these days it is no more than a way for shops to raise prices of their useless products and get away with it! And technically it isn't even a religious holiday since didn't historians find that Jesus wasn't actually born in December! As far as I am aware, December was chosen as a way of converting the old pagans to christianity, as it was their holiday of 'Yule'! Confused

Laughing @ Danny.

The way I see it, I spend something like £80 on presents and get something like £500 back. That's a good investment. Christmas is good for my pocket Very Happy . plus the food is nice Smile.

Pride has caused more wars than anything else religion is just the excuse.

Most religions suggest piece on earth rather than war it's the pride of some people and the thought that their religion should be the only one that causes problems.

But most religions preach that there is only one true god etc...

(Well, Islam, Christianity and Judaism certainly do)

My argument is if there was no religion there could be no excuse for bigotry.

Look at Northern Ireland, if there was no difference between roman catholicism and CofE then there wouldn't be a problem would there?

I don't really fancy getting into this kind of argument because although I may be an atheist I strongly disagree with those who disrespect religious people. People can believe whatever they want to believe. It just seems to me that the organised part of the religion is generally what preaches the hate etc. (Directly or indirectly - Vatican during the crusades etc. , The pope refusing to step in in the whole NI thing etc.)

I wouldn't dare to preach that god doesn't exist or whatever my standpoint might be, because I would be lowering myself to the same level as that of members of organised religion that preached the earth was the centre of the solar system etc.

I certainly don't mean to insult people, just telling you what I believe. Smile

It has very little to do with religeon, and more to do with the histories of the 2 communities over the centuries, which just happen to be split along religeous lines, and CofE is barely a denomination over there.

All the best
