'One of Time Magazine's 100 Best Novels'

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/c/c1/Watchmencharacters.jpg/250px-Watchmencharacters.jpg

I was pretty sceptical when I read that statement but approximately 3/4's of the way through this book (or 'comic book' if you'd prefer) and I'd proffer the opinion that I've rarely read a book comic or otherwise that immerses the reader into the world that it portrays so well.

Apparantly a film adaptation is being made for next year. Details HERE

Anyone else read it or care to offer any type of critique (even if it's the 'Load of Pretentious Comic Book Crap' variety)?

The world will look up and shout 'Save Us' and I'll whisper 'No'.

An update for anyone that might be interested (not too many if responses are anything to go by Laughing )

The Films release date is set for 3rd June next year. there's a preview of the film HERE and it's a pretty well put together site if you take a few minutes to check it out.

The film's 'style' has been compared to Sin City by Director Kevin Smith...

Kevin Smith wrote:
I saw 'Watchmen', It’s fucking astounding. The Non-Disclosure Agreement I signed prevents me from saying much, but I can spout the following with complete joygasmic enthusiasm: Snyder and Co. have pulled it off.

Remember that feeling of watching “Sin City” on the big screen and being blown away by what a faithful translation of the source material it was, in terms of both content and visuals? Triple that, and you’ll come close to watching “Watchmen.” Even Alan Moore might be surprised at how close the movie is to the book...

I'd still suggest that the book is worth a read though Thumbs Up

I bought the book as soon as I heard about the film TBH.

One of the few graphic novels I hadn't read!

Book is excellent, and was a real turning point for the comic book / graphic novels of the era. We have Watchmen to thank for every anti-hero and the decline of the 'Captain America' type heroes Thumbs Up

I just hope they put enough depth into the film and don't go for the all out special effect dross that Fantastic Four has become.

Kevin Smith had better be right....!

Did you know that they are releasing a DVD that tells the story of the pirate comic when the Watchmen film comes out?

Oh and check out this months Empire if you want more Wink

Smith is a real stickler when it comes to this sort of thing, some might say he's a 'comic book nerd' having written one for DC comics...

...personally I'd trust his synospis.

Didn't know aboutt he DVD although I had thought previously that the Pirate Story would've made a good story in itself with a bit of background padding of the characters - Top Stuff Thumbs Up

I'm having trouble seeing how a successful film can really do the book justice, it's one of the darker worlds and the story is quite disturbing on some levels, certainly not your average popcorn action flick which is what most of the adaptations have been so far. I sincerely hope he can pull it off though, as RealNinja points out, it was pretty ground breaking and is still one of my favourites even now. Not bad considering it's been around for 20 odd years.

I was assuming it was an honest mistake and just let it slide. I'm charitable like that Laughing
