Bikes these days don't really need running in. I would say as long as you don't scream the pants off it too soon you'll be fine.

You might need more Running-in than the machine.
Take the opportunity to get used to the beastie.
No heavy loading Low speed High gears.
No heavy loading Low gears High speed.
Check the engine oil before you take it out. New engines will/may use a little as they 'come together'. Not pints though, just a little more.
Do not show off too much.
Your mates will dump you. Embarassed

Forgot:
Try to vary the speed of the engine on the m/way. Run in 5 then 6 then 5. Old technique to prevent constant RPM setting stubborn wear patterns in a new cylinder bore.

Need??!!! If you need to use the motorway don't hold it at constant revs. But I don't know anywhere in this country where you need to use the motorway to get to. You would be better of taking the A & B roads to get you used to the bike and give the brakes, tyres and all other parts a bit of variety to run in.

There is a school of though that the first time you use it you should run it to max revs and get it *really* hot.
150mph on the motorway bit then.

In the world just ride it normally, keep the revs below 6,000 at least till it's warmed up but don't leave it idling to warm up - long periods idling is the one thing that definitely isn't a good idea.

DON'T do that. The rings won't seal properly if you do and you'll lose compression.

When a bike is run in on the dyno (for race bikes) its run through the rev range through the gears with hardly any load on the engine.

You should try and do the same. It will be less harsh than a dyno (obviously) but for a road bike that is a good thing.

Don't labour the engine by riding in top gear at 20mph. Try to keep the revs down, but use them if you need to and try not to hold the bike at constant revs for any length of time.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

I never broke the monkey in from the crate and its been ok with no problems. Just be gentle with the revs and don't go for prolonged periods of time at max revs.

Though about that when I posted but there are always access roads. Right off Harlington road just before motorway bridge, first left then then first or second right will take you to Toddington Services . Wink
