Was talking about how nice it'd be to just up sticks and run away from the rat race yesterday and live of the phat of the land like High fernley-Whatshisname and the Wild Gourmets come Ray Mears.

You've got a few quid for petrol in the back burner and a desire to have a 'Max and Paddy Road to nowhere'.

Where would you head first?

To live off the land, you'd need some kit, but what would you class as essential to live on a whim with and not be constrained to taking everything but the kitchen sink?

Arrow One man bivvy tent
Arrow Billy cans
Arrow Spork
Arrow khukuri (Gurhka knife)
Arrow Folding shovel
Arrow Folding spinning rod with spare hooks, line etc
Arrow Bungee cords
Arrow Matches and a lighter

Arrow Toothbrush and toothpaste
Arrow Soap

and maybe a change of underpants

I think it'd have to be the coastal areas first and make my way round the UK before heading inland to the hills, dales and forests.

No Long Way Down stylee with support trucks and massively loaded panniers.

The 7R would cut the mustard most of the way as long as its on the black stuff, but off road? The Monkey? I need a new bike!

Think about this sort of thing quite a lot actually and it is something that would interest me, even just for the "would I cope" factor.

I work in an outdoor shop and we recently got a couple of one man bivi's in for an open evening that we're doing. I wouldn't like to be in one of those for too long, everyone who works there said the same. Would be okay in an absolute emergency, but I'd soon get rather uncomfortable with the idea.

Oh, and sporks are the biggest waste of time I've ever come across! I'd rather have a metal knife and a fork and not snap the things in half! Laughing

i tramped stewart island (nz's 3rd island) for over a month with 1 mate, it was great, we didnt see another person the whole time.
we had the basics (including mountain radio in case someone broke a leg(no cell coverage)) we stayed in the tent some of the time, in cabins, and even in caves Very Happy it was a wicked trip. we took a rifle, but the couple of times we did see flighty deer, it was strapped to the pack.

the thing i found that was really helpfull is a small frypan, and billy pot.
and if you are gunna stay in one place a long while, then a tarp can make all the difference in keeping dry in your bush bivvy

and lots of socks and underwear..... nothing worse than walking a whole day and then washing your sweaty balls in ice cold water, just to find that you have to put smelly jocks back on.

if you can do it i recommend it. dunno where you could possibly do it in the uk,

You might be surprised what even a quite heavy road bike like the 7r can achieve of road if you're not trying to go fast and avoid seriously muddy bits.

To add to your list, as you're doing it in the UK
Arrow Mobile Phone
Arrow Number for dominos

i think living off the land is a bit far fetched, but going camping is something anyone can do

one thing i'd warn about is never ever use the front brake when on wet grass on a camp site when your bike is a sports 600

Yeah, living off the land is a bit difficult in the UK. Its so densely populated and wild animals are not really that plentiful (i.e. you don't just find wild deer and boars running around that you can just kill without protection laws etc).

But I'd love to try it in the wilds of Finland or Russia or somewhere, living off random foodstuffs.

quite easy to do in new zealand as there are plenty of deer and pigs and what not, and if worse come to worse, there is always the trusty native wood pigeon (illegal to kill, but very tasty Very Happy) or the possums and rabbits which are not bad either, and they make a good hat or mittens if your in a bind Very Happy

Plenty of pigeons, rabbits and fish though. Much easier to prepare than deer and boar, too.

Did forget to add 'a gun' to the list.

Not sure what the local constabulary would think seeing a bike going down the road with a gun strapped to the pillion seat. Laughing
