Oil sight glass in the wrong place on earlier models.
Ideally you want better suspension, that's about it I think...... ____________________ My Flickr |

I believe the earlier models with the rotary rear suspension were dubbed the "Widowmaker"
Not ridden one however....though my mate rides a TL1000R. And he loves that, and it still has that rotary suspension methinks. He doesnt seem to have a massive problem with it *shrugs* ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

You'll need a keen eye for picking up a second hand one, sometimes can be a well used, nutters tool.
Fork seals
Bearings
Calipers
Head stock
etc...
A guy at work has one with welded VTR cans on it, never heard a TL-S like it, ever. Maybe it's the way he rides it, but it actually freaks me out. ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

You need to go for an early S to get the full power engine, later ones have dropped power, as has the R. However this ‘R’ model was lightly tuned – filter, full system and fuelling setup to suit.
This one did have Ohlins shock and fork internals as well as steering damper.
As with any twin, it needs to be revved to make properly decent progress, yet doesn’t seem to reward as much when you do.
It’s far from light and does feel a bit barge-like in handling compared to a bit sportier bikes. With the Ohlins stuff it seemed pretty stable, which some consider to be a good thing; but then some consider cruisers to be a good thing (admittedly a bit more stability would be useful on my 675, though).
The power does come in fairly strong from mid revs, but feels more train-like than my slightly-trick zx9 which feels a bit more ‘lively’ (and has about an extra 20hp on top as well as maybe 30kg less, so not too surprising). |

Just make sure it was recalled under warranty. I'm sure there were a few recalls made, one of which was to replace the frame. IIRC the damper not only contributed to a nasty tank-slapping tendancy, but also cracked the frame. Can anyone confirm this? Im fairly certain but not 100% sure.

The rear damper is rubbish, as is the standard steering damper. They never recalled for the frame, although only a handful cracked. The point to check is where the spring of the seperate pre-load damper mounts, on the right hand side at the rear.
The engine is a good 'un and less 'twin-like' than a lot of other twins, rewarding revs as opposed to midrange. They were torque limited (by way of the ignition) in the first three gears, you can buy a tre (timing retard eliminator) to remove this but it's basically a 15 ohm resistor.
I quite liked the one my ex had and I don't like twins, as a rule. It reached it's limit much sooner than my Blade though, knee down felt lively, although that was from the reart and was almost certainly that damper.
I'd have one as a wheelie bike but not as a first bike.
Cheers

Ridden an SRAD 750 and a TLS. I'd take the GSXR every time.
TLS was a bit tame and dissapointing tbh. I was expecting a bike that was a mental handful. Feel's like all 1000cc twins I've ridden, deceptively quick but quite boring.
I have to agree with G! |
