Hi, Quick question.

We have a Small generator at work. Single phase petrol jobby. The battery for the electric start has bust. We charged + tested the battery and no luck. Please corect me if i`m wrong,

It`s when the battery is under load (i.e when we actually push the button to start) that we need to test, to see whether it can keep it`s voltage. Will there be any drop, and if so, what is an acceptable (roughly) voltage drop. It`s a 12v battery.

By the way, we are pretty sure it`s the battery thats gone, as it also has pull start, which works fine. I don`t think the generator has a changing system for the battery, although it would make scence to have an alternator there..anyway.

Thanks in advance.

Richard

It's just about impossible to tell - Yes, there will be a drop, but even with a proper tester (which loads up the battery for you) it's along the lines of "that doesn't look good". If the battery is a couple of years old accept it's stuffed and buy a new one Smile

The generator will certainly charge it's battery. Either it'll be a 12V generator which uses an inverter to give you 240V, it which case it'll to tap off some of that, or it'll have it's own charging coils.

There will definately be a drop in battery voltage when its cranking the engine. What it will be is anyone's guess. It won't drop below about 9 volts at a guess, if it does it won't have enough power to hold the starter solenoid closed.

It will have a charging circuit for the battery.
