Lo all, bought a zxr earliy this year and have now found out it needs a new engine. I bought the bike for cheap enough and spent 300 quid on fairings.

The garage have said the best thing to do is either put a new engine in or sell the bike as its that bad lol.

What would you lot do? new engine or new bike?

Money is tight at the mobut im going to cancel my insurance so that should free things up a bit, if i bought a new bike I would poss have around a grand-1200 to spend. What types of decent bikes can you get for that money? I loved my 400 when I first rode it but this has just put me off them completely lol Sad

Can't you just rebuild the existing engine?

That would cost way more and be much more difficult than an engine swap. Particularly as you don't know what in the engine is damaged.

Good deal?

If he'll fit it and show you it working that is a good deal.

Then sell it and buy what you really want! Smile

It sounds like a good deal considering he is only charging ₤50 labour to fit an engine and he can show you it working while you're there with him, so I'd say do it then either keep the bike or sell it and get another one. Although ₤1200 does seem like a pretty limited budget to buy an SRAD with, how about the cost of insurance? Confused

Laughing

It might be unless they say "This insurance company doesn't insure 600's - we'll have to cancel the policy and start again!"

£700 later...

Don't see why a ZX9 engine can't go in, the Fireblade engine will go in the ZXR400. Don't do it though, the only documented case resulted in a snapped frame, presumably due to weight and torque, too much stress for the frame, it was later braced and welded and it seemed to cope, so not ideal without serious frame modifications.

He's not actually fitting it for £50 labour as he's said he'll take your old engine away, so he's getting an engine out of it too, could be an easy fix for him. What exactly is wrong with it? could well be an easy fix, or could be a pain and not worth the hassle.

Well, I'm breaking a ZZR-600 for spares (not cost effective to put her back on the road once the broken leg has healed up) so there'll be a complete engine, gearbox and all the gubbins going for a reasonable price. not sure if it'll drop in there, but it's a 100bhp IL4 block with 22k on the clock so might suit your needs.

K.

More likely the head gasket has gone, usual on ZXRs at that sort of mileage, cheaper to fix than new engine if that's what it is, can sort it with the engine in situ I'd imagine, might be quite awkward though.
