Well this is gona take a few months as im only part time so the money doesn't come easy!

But yeah, i flipped the Hornet 2 or so weeks ago, not too quick but still did what i thought was the engine casing, but it seems ive done the crankcase too, and i already had a missing 2nd gear so i thought its new engine time, so tonight i got it out.

Going to be getting rid of the clocks, headlight, the lot, welding a 12 bar on, engine cage, hopefully painting it candy orange too, it'll take a while but itll be worth it.

The R and G racing mushies for the hornet are huge and really robust. Someone I know had a Hornet with them on, he crashed a couple of times with no damage to the bike, only a small scuff on the mushroom.

https://www.hondahornet.co.uk/images/hondahornet3.jpg

Ordinarily I'd suggest purchasing a cage, but I'm not sure that anyone makes one for the Hornet.

I've just ordered an MXD 3 point cage for my blade. Should take about four weeks from the US. Only cost £150 inc shipping too! Smile

aye wasnt that bad though, didnt think i could do the crankcases in from it, took a chunk out the tarmac where i landed though. Laughing was casted up for a few days but meh, 'sall part of the fun.

snapped me footpegs, did the brake levers in, and scuffed everything else, like i say main damage is the crankcase.

Yes and have worse damage done to your bike when you realise your new design is stronger than your engine mounts and your bike falls apart on your first crash! Wink

If crash protection was easy, then all of the manufacturers would have it as standard. Some crash protectors make some crashes worse. Some poorly designed crash protectors are worse than no crash protection.

At least the R and G's are proven, and if you make up your own cage you can build in the strength that you want rather than making something too weak or too strong. And if it goes wrong you've got no one to blame but yourself.

Personally I've just ordered a MXD 3 point cage from the US, and shall be awaiting it eagerly. Smile

I would well consider trying to fix that crankcase. You are going to buy another anyway, so try this:

Take the sump off, flush some oil (or whatever you have to hand really) through it, get any shit or ally splinters out, then see about the hole you made. Get a lump of wood, shape it right, then get some crankweld (like liquid metal but designed for crank casings) and slap it on. it doesn't have to be neat or tidy, it just has to be the right shape to seal to a new engine cover. Then drill a smaller than bolt sized hole into it where the bolt for the engine cover would be, and if you can be bothered tap it n that. Then get some silicone sealant, you know the clear gasket stuff that is very high temperature squeezy gummy stuff, and liberally apply that all round it, stick your new engine casing on, and then squirt the stuff through the hole where the bolt should be. Get a bolt, cut it to size, and put it in, turning it forcefully but gently, so you almost tap it, but just seal it with the sealant. Heat gun dry the whole lot, redo the sump, oil in (cheapest you can get and the most you can get fill it right up, and leave it upright for a day or two. If it hasn't leaked by this point put it back in and fire it up, see if it leaks. If it has I've saved you ~£300, if not then you lost £30 seeing if it is salvagable.

Obviously I can't see the extent of the damage but I assume its only where one of the bolts has sheared off a lump of the casing? thats a common thing on the bandit/hornet/fazer shaped engines n that.

Just my thoughts Laughing

An image of an MXD 'three point cage'. The model that I ordered for my blade.

This one hasn't been powder coated yet, but I have asked for mine to be powder coated.

The big R&G's are very good on the Hornet as MarJay says. Mine fell over a couple of times, only a scuff on the protector. Nothing else touched down.

Bit of a noob question but isnt that similar to standard engine bars on something like a Bandit?

Similar yes, but not exactly the same.

When did you last see someone getting their knee down with engine bars, and when did you last see engine bars that protect full fairings! Smile

I've been looking at the Rentecc engine bars, seen as though sick innovations or anywhere else ive looked at dont do hornet cages.

Was gona try and fix the crankcase, but theres no point, im missing 2nd gear anyway, the crankcase is cracked about 2 inches down too, might aswell just lob a cbr 600 engine in. Thumbs Up

Most stunt cages touch down before the pegs anyway, so it wouldn't make any difference. Stunt bikes aren't designed for scratching usually, and if he wants to use it to do trackdays and the like then he can simply remove the engine bars.
