PostPosted: 12:00 - 20 Jan 2004    Post subject: An Experiment [HELP!] Reply with quote

Anybody have hosting they wouldn't mind donating for a short experiment? I want to try and split the images from the scripts on BCF, and have the actual pages served as normal with the images coming from one of several random other servers. I want to run a trial on this to see if it can yield any performance gains and how much bandwidth would be required.

All you would need to do is put a set of static images online in their own directory structure. Avatars, attachments and anything dynamic would still be served off here, and if we managed enough mirrors the bandwidth hit should be minor (the images in question are all small and account for less than 5% of BCF's bandwidth, but a lot of requests).

Any volunteers? Thinking

Go on then, I have a hosting account and some URL that I've never got round to using. One of those money making waster projects that didn't turn into anything. It's even one of those unlimited bandwidth plans. Just message me and I'll give you the details.

Hi

And me. I am paying for around 40gb of bandwidth but only using 2~3 so it should be OK.

Can only upload them tonight though.

All the best

The attached zipfile contains all the images. All that's needed is for them to be accessible via URL, i.e:

Yeah you have, you can check by adding "templates/standard/images/logo_phpBB.gif" to the end of your url and seeing if it bring up the logo.

There's 9 up now, seems to be working well on my test version of BCF. One more and we'll make it live and see what happens.

I was then going to say is this something to do with lots of icons and small images disappearing and not being found.

Hi Korn

Noticed something tonight. Using Opera it gives you a running total of how many images it has downloaded so far, out of a total. Noticed one thread that listed 238 images, and quite a few listing over 200. It was normally around 50, with 70ish at a push.

My suspicion is that you have randomised the source of these images and we are now downloading the same image from several different sources each time we load a page.

All the best

Keith

It is indeed. Just looked to see where the "email" buttons were coming from for your post, and the post above it, and one is from okas.co.uk and one is from evilbendy.co.uk Neutral Question

Oops, there should have been only 1 source per image. Anyway, I don't think it helped any (did it?) so I've turned it off.

Hi

I think it probably would have helped a touch if each copy of the same image had the same source. Should have given your server an easier time.

Down side was that on a 56k modem it took substantially longer to load a page. 100 images takes a while even if they are only 1kb a piece.

All the best

Keith

Old Thread Alert!

The last post was made 20 years, 97 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful?
