Hi folks,
Although I wasnt known too much around here, I had been biking for around a year. The reason I havent been posting in over 7 weeks is because I was in a bike accident, breaking my spine as a result.

I was driving down a road at a mere 20mph in wet conditions when the car infront of me came to a sudden stop. Instead of down-shifting to slow down without locking the wheel, I paniced and hit the back breaks. The bike slid and i came off. I slid for about 30 foot (the police say) before an oncoming car drove into my back at about 20mph (20+20 = 40mph impact).

I broke the lowest vertabre in my back. I was taken to a hospital 130miles away via helicopter from local hospital for specialist treatment. I lost the feeling in my legs for 3 days. I was told I would never walk again. To be told that at 17 years of age is quite a shock. So im sure all you bikeheads can understand that im selling my featherweight NSR (Maybe if the frame was made of steel I wouldnt have slid!)

Be careful,
Niall

Not to be negative but worse could have happened just walking down the street. I'd like to think that nothing like that would put me off biking.

Sounds rather nasty. It'd certainly be enough to put me off biking.

I suppose in this situation you can't blame a guy for the decision to leave biking, put even the most advanced rider off. Your spine is very precious, you only get one in life, I came off recently at a higher speed and got a bruise and a lump, hardly seems fair, but anyway hope you recover well, and go on to live a good life... mabe driving a Hilux or even a HumVee though! Then you can drive over everyone else safe as houses! Wink

All the best in the future, mate. Thumbs Up

Diehard

Bad luck mate, hope you're recovering! Take what the doctors tell you with a grain of salt, they always lay out the worst possible outcome to avoid getting your hopes up. Can't say I blame you wanting to pack it in, must have been utterly terrifying being told that Shocked

Hey folks,
Thanks for the words of encouragment.

I am mobile and walking again, but very limited. As you can imagine 7 weeks lying in a bed, your muscles turn to jelly. I have a body cast on supporting my back now, which I will have to keep on for 6 weeks.

But im walking and I will recover, although my back will never be as flexable again. I havent given up biking for life, just for a year or thereabouts.

Yer sorry to hear about that, hope you make a full recovery and are OK. I've come of my bikes on the road a couple of times taking corners and roundabouts abit too fast in the wet, one time was at 15mph and once at over 30mph. Luckily i always wear the full biking gear and i've been doing motorcross for years so i'm used to coming of and i can usually do it with out hurting myself at all just the odd broses and shoulder aches. But no form of transport is 100% safe. It even happens to the best of drivers its just being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
