I'm no techie, but the software developer I work with has pointed me towards this story.
I'm just a bit surprised that it's not got more press in the more mainstream media.
I'll admit I don't understand it 100% (on the technical side) but it seems to be that Microsoft is loading all the ISO committees worldwide to try and get OOXML certified as a standard because it suits them. Smells rather corrupt to me.

I think it's typical of Microsoft, and not just them alone there are plenty of vendors who manipulate standards to their own advantage. It's in the nature of a commercial organization to lock you into their products and secure repeat revenue. HTML 4.0, SQL 92, Java, and others are all defined by ISO standards yet M$ and others extend functionality some of which is benefcial, but in truth only has one motive. Personally I prefer to keep my software reliance as generic as possible.
It's the same with the M$ certification I think they would prefer Computer Science degrees to be consigned to the history books and for the industry and everyone in it to be certified (most of them should be). This is something else I'll resist, I was offered certification at work, and though I agree with the adage "the right tool for the job" I disagree with having to adopt a vendor's standards to be acceptable. As I pointed out if a degree in computing is insufficient then we really shouldn't be in the job, and that in no way negates the benefits of continual training.
Standards are exactly that, something to be met, not driven by a vendor who thinks they know better. And if they do really know better then they can give the industry the benefit of their wisdom and sit on the ISO committees and share their knowledge.
I also thought there was an open standard for word processor documents and that's Rich Text Files (rtf). ____________________ My claim to fame: Austin Vince nicked my pen... |
