Is the job you do the one you wanted to do when you were growing up or is there a job you would prefer to do?

Hi

That depends on whether you mean doing the job you wanted to do, or finding out that the job includes a massive amount of pointless paperwork.

I am a computer programmer. I enjoy programming, but I just cannot stand all the paperwork this industry is getting infected with.

All the best

Keith

I'm not doing the job that I wanted to do when I was growing up, and boy am I glad I'm not! The job I have is much more fun! But I would prefer to be in the sound side of the industry and not the pictures part - oh well!

When I was growing up we were never told that there were fun jobs out there... it seems school wants everyone to be a scientist or you're a loser! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

I want to be rally driver but until I get discovered I'm stuck supporting 2nd rate personnel software. Is it just me or is IT really boring?

Who here has the best job?

No, I wanted to be a scientist at one point and my school discouraged it. Its more like your school want you to work in a supermarket, thats why they say that things like games and art are important. I Hated Games and Art, but I was made to do it until my GCSE's.

I wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was little. I did right up until I failed the medical for RAF pilot when I was 18. Then I thought: "Why should I give my life to discipline and servitude if I'm not going to be flying?" So I went to University to study Physics and Chemistry. Hmm.. sounds familiar. Hated it, changed to Mechanical Engineering.

This was a good move. Apart from the fact that I'm rubbish at calculus. I loved every minute until I ran out of money. I realised that I was an engineer, and there was no other career for me.

Hmm what to do? well, as many of you know I ended up working at Sainsburys for a spell (three years Shocked ).

Big mistake. Luckily my current job is really good and it is engineering. Not mechanical engineering, but still fun nonetheless.
I kind of accidentally ended up with it, and its in the Broadcasting industry (Kinda like Rob).

It is a pain sometimes and the customers can cause hassle, but I wouldn't change it for all of the tea in china. Smile

I wanted to be a pilot when I was growing up. But somehow I became a web monkey instead. Confused

It's not as much fun as it was a few years back (when there was more money to spend and dot coms ruled) but equally, it's not as stressful as it was then either. Pays the bills. Smile

Not sure what I want to do next. Probably something that doesn't involve sitting in front of a computer all day.

I wanted to be a Pilot because I love aircraft, especially fast jets. This was not my only reason though. Part of my logic when I was ten years old involved the fact that all astronauts were fast jet pilots first and foremost, before they became astronauts.

Also James Bond was in the armed services before he was in MI6, so I figured (at ten years old ) that either would be a good job, Astronaut or Spy! Smile

I would like to try my hand at some mechanical stuff again, but I think I would keep that as an interest rather than as my career. I am hoping to also try my hand at some software engineering soon too. I'll have to see how it all pans out! Smile

Oh but science is a fun job! Wink

Not sure if I intended to be a scientist but I was always good at science at school so a science degree seemed to be a good idea and my home town university is famous for biochemistry so I went in for that.

Not sure how much longer I'll stay in it though... Thinking

I've wanted to be a policeman Laughing, pilot, F1 racer, the list goes on from a very young age, like everyone else.

The past few years I've been interested in graphics/design and from that I'm part-time at FB (which is a top job obviously), and recently a Junior Designer.

So at the mo I'm doing what I've always wanted to do Very Happy

I always wanted to an RAF pilot, went for selection, failed. Decided that I didn't really want to sign a 16 year contract anyway.

So now I'm studying to be a commercial pilot. Smile

No, it is so I am allowed to make a living by flying aeroplanes (which includes flying aircraft towing banners).

OI!!

Art is important, and so are games - as the riding level of obesity on children is showing.
Art is incredibly important for expression, communication and a large amount of understanding of human nature. Just because I will have an art degree does not mean that I will be working in a supermarket. There are many very valuably jobs that require a knowledge of the arts, just one example would be a music therapist whom helps children and adults communicate and heal.

Music and art can have very strong subliminal effects on the human brain, try listening to a film instead of watching it and you'll see what I mean.

That being said, I always wanted to be an engineer.... tried it, decided all the guys who you have to work with are generally total muppets and are just far too frustrating.

Jobs you want when you are growing up tend not to be realistic IMO.

I would want to do kayaking/ canoeing instructing full time, but there isn't really much money in it Confused Might have to sort out doing some more qualifactions though and I might be able to. It was the only job I've had where I really enjoyed what I was doing pretty much every day. Neutral

Well i always wanted to be a development engineer for a Automotive firm, or a Motorcycle manufactuer. Was always interested in engines as a kid, at one stage i was into messing with lawnmower engines, and trying not very successully to build a go kart. I also was into 2 stroke outboard boat motors, and liked taking them apart as you do! By my High school days i wanted to be a Jet Aircraft mechanic/engineer, and liked the idea of working on big Jet engines. Erm i was very mathmatically challenged at school and college, and so i kinda gave up on that idea, tho i still think it would have been cool to work on jet planes as a job, although i dont know anyone who has gone into this area of engineering.
