Get some chain cleaner and a rag and with the bike on a paddock stand and the engine turned off just give it a good rub down and then get some spray on lube and spray it onto the chain on the outside (sprocket where the chain sits) then on the inside (where the chain travels between sprockets is best) and spin the wheel by hand after a nice run to heat the chain up so the lube goes where it should. Thumbs Up

Wurth do a highly reccomended chain cleaner. Ride gave it the green triangle and i like it, spray on with a rag behind and ey voila.

Not the cheapest but if you wanna guarantee a good job.

Good chain dry chain lube as well so usually can get both together.

Dont use WD-40 on chains, Wurth is good stuff it will clean anything off instantly, but anything works tbh, i've used a good range of chain and carb cleaners and they all work.

I thought wd40 could damage the o-rings? And as for carb cleaner....? Surely that'll crisp them up a treat?!

Most of the time I use WD40 to clean, if my mate's garage is open I use their big tin of kerosene Mr. Green

Holts chain lube afterwards.

Carb cleaner is the same as chain cleaner, if it wasnt fit for purpose then why would they sell it for that purpose?

this confuses me, one person says don't use something then another person says they use the same thing.

I've bought some wd-40, would i be ok to clean the chain using this and a rag then add some lube?

Also, how often should a chain be cleaned and lubed? every 200 mileS? more/less?

I used WD40 to clean the chain - I found no harm
Its down to personal preferance.

As for lube - I used to use Castrol Wax - However, I couldnt really see where it was.
I highly reccomend Holtz Lube - Its green, its gunk and I know its going to get into the places it needs.
You might get a bit of back fling, however leave it for 10 mins the just give a quick wipe round.
I lube mine (or try too) after each heavy down pour - this past week ive not managed too as Im not home and within a week its rusty.

Found a good trick for cleaning/lubing chain. You need a centre stand or paddock stand. Get a roll of cling film cover the back wheel with it, including tyre. Clean and lube, then start the bike select first gear, let the wheel spin for a bit to get the excess lube off, then remove the film!!. Must remember to remove the film lol

I always use a tin of spray brake cleaner to clean my chain cos if its safe for your brake seals its got to be safe for my O-rings so says our chief technician at work and i have have never had a problem but i have had a lot of clean and shiny chains and you will find it a lot cheaper than chain cleaners aimed at bikes specifically cos as you know they like to fleece the gullible biker Thumbs Up Thumbs Up Laughing
