SV or ER6

Hi everyone,

I've paid a deposit on an SV650S but I have just seen the ER6f as well, bear in mind it would need to be restricted as well, have I made the right choice?

Anyone had any experience of the two, advice appreciated

ER6 for me, don't like the SV much.

Avoid the ER, ive been riding the N version for the past couple of months.

The fueling is so jerky at 30mph its unreal, its very thirsty, uncomfortable and is rotting away.

I give it its due, its now at 5000 miles and still on its running in oil!
OE tyres are crap too.

It's a good cheap basic bike which if you get more flush or feel the need to can be modified (Shocks, Front end, etc . .). Only downer on the SV is the bolts are the biggest pile of crud ever and round quicker than the wheels and the front end will scare you.

Though a set of new springs and oil in the front for under £100 and some stainless bolts from ebay will sort these out no problem.

If you buying, i'd go with R+G's too and a scottoiler and the bike will trundle on forever.

+1 for the R&G's, saved my SV from potentially costly damage on a few occasions especially when it blew over parked on concrete.

i've heard reviews that your size doesn't matter on the sv whether your 5 ft or 6 ft 3 (like me).

it's the best starter bike out there imo although i *think* the ninja 250r will rival it with younger, more sportier riders.

The SV is pants on a big scale compared to most other bikes but with a £4k price and £500 worth of work done to it you can have a really, tidy restricted bike.

If i had £500 to spend on the SV i'd go with:

R+G - £70
Scottoiler - £65
Rear Hugger - £70
Fenda Extenda - £20
Top Yoke Cover - £20
New Springs + Fork Oil - £90

and enough left over for an aftermarket fuel can if you want it.

BTW don't buy new if you got the cash, look for a good over 2 years old 2nd hand one so you don't have to worry about taking it to a dealers for servicing to keep the warranty up,

I liked the SV. I had an '07 model as an insurance bike for a month or so.
Extremely easy to ride, nice handling, totally unthreatening but fun bike. Very lacking in power compared to my Fazer, but that was partially mitigated by the riding position. I could take the SV up to its top speed of 120ish in total comfort because of the riding position which is sporty without being ridiculous like most modern sportsbikes, whereas that kind of speed on the upright Fazer = being blown around all over the place.

I was in a similar position and ended up picking the er6. Almost 10 months on and 8k covered she's still going strong and im happy with my choice...

Ive got an ER-6F and i love it, i didn't ride an SV only sat on one. The only thing that i prefer from the SV is the slightly more aggressive bar position, however the new bars i have on order will sort this.

I've tried both and I used to have an ER6n.

If you're planning to do trackdays, get an SV as the riding position is more suited.

If you want a more comfortable, safer, but equally fast bike, get the ER6.

Either way, try before you buy.

Thanks everyone,

Seems the majority of people are suggesting the SV although the comments for the ER are very persuasive.

Is the SV bigger than the ER or are they about the same size?

And does the ER have a more relaxed riding position because when I tried the SV out I couldn't get used to the position of the pegs pushing me forwards, although that was in the show room it might be different on the road.

I bought mine for £4000 brand new with 0% finance bit of haggling and a pair of draggin jeans also included....i would never have considered buying new if it wasn't for the finance.

Maybe have a look and see if anyone is still offering good deals?

I could but would you like to pay my insurance It does look very nice though

I think I will settle with the SV and keep it through my restriction period and get it lowered.

I used to own an SV, it was okay, but the forks were crap. Went okay, sounded okay, was okay on fuel, looked okay.

Good first big bike. Comfy enough. Still, if you've got £3600, it's alot of money which I'd think twice about before blowing on an SV.

Plus most are shagged.

I see what your saying garth but I think you have hit the nail on the head really with 'okay'.

Its an okay bike to start with and the insurance is okay its kind of one of those middle bikes that does everything you need it to do but doesn't do a lot else.

I have thought long about it and searched for one, the one I have seen it 4 years old 9k on the clock and fully serviced so it should be good for at least a few years through my restriction period, i mean if you can suggest any alternatives at around the same insurance bracket as well i'm fully open to alternatives because thats why i thought of the ER6

I'm just trying to get the best value for money that will last me for at least the next 2 years without too much going wrong.
