hi, i'm kinda new to the biking business but i do enjoy ridin. i was wonderin if anyone would be able to advise as to whether its a good decsion to get myself the new cbr125 (not all that expensive) rather than a second hand nsr125. Wuld it be as much fun to ride? and would it be a nippy sportsbike like the nsr125 once derestricted??
thnx for the help!

No. NSR is a much better bike. The CBR125 is just a CG125 with some expensive fairings around it.

No, it'll be worse than an NSR. No it won't be nippy.

Go for an NSR

Maybe. Depends on what you want to use it for. The CBR is a small and not very quick 125. Fine for learning on, but I expect most people would get bored of it very quickly.

The CBR is not restricted so cannot be derestricted. A derestricted NSR would leave it behind, although the CBR is probably better on fuel and more reliable.

All the best

CBR125 is still over priced and like Ste said, it's just a CG125 with a naff fairing.

IT's a four stroke too, and with about 10 ponies or however many it's got, it'll just be boring!

Most of the people on this site will say spend a grand or so on a cheap NSR125, get experience, learn to ride then do full test and get a bigger bike.

Being fair is is not a CG125 engine. It is a more modern liquid cooled engine with an over head cam (I think). Manages 9.7kW. The learner limit is 11kW. The NSR as standard put out 9kW (the old learner limit).

All the best

Yeah the engine probably is better than the CG and I'd imagine it handles better too. But it's still a lot of cash for an ugly little bike.

I say go for an NSR, at least when you sell it you will make [most of] your cash back...

Do a search for cbr125 and see the other comments, or look on the 125cc sportsbikes forum.

Its not a cg engine, its a sleved down cbr150 engine with a 2valve SOHC head, compared to the 4valve SOHC on the 150cc.

However, if the person who owns one on 125cc sportsbikes is to be beleived, it will nudge 156mph!

Get an NSR because :

* Looks better
* Faster
* Cheaper (if you're buying second hand)
* Almost everyone on here seems to have had dealings with NSRs at some point.....so they know everything about them and can help with any problems.

wow, Shocked thanks a lot for all the advice guys. its made me reconsider...... are u serious abt the cbr not even being restricted? if so, ur rite abt it not beating the nsr. i have heard though tht it has great handling - even better than nsr?!?!?

having had a look round it does seem as though it'll cost less to get a cbr. truth is, i'm no genius when it comes to bikes so i'd make a real mess of it if i headed out to buy a second hand nsr Embarassed .

still....mebbe a cbr is better way to build up a no-claims-bonus before buying a cbr600 or a gsx1300 - any ideas???

Get an NSR. It won't pull your arms out of their sockets and shouldn't scare you, but if you're new to bikes then they're good fun. You can just as easily build up a NCB on the NSR as you can on a CBR.

(Maybe if no one buys the CBR125 they'll redesign the NSR for 2005 Wink )

I thought you said that you were scared of the NSR. Laughing

Getting an old model of the NSR is probably the best idea, spares are pretty easy to get hold of and cheap, someones almost always selling some on here. Don't waste your money on a brand new 125, I paid £3000 for an RS125 and ended up selling it for £1650 about 6 months later. I could have got more but there was crash damage from when I got knocked off, only a slow slide but it caused £2000 worth of damage because of the fairings mainly.

You've admitted your no expert when it comes to bikes so the less plastic on the bike the better because you will be likely to have an off at some point, I came off in my first week, mainly because of road conditions but also inexperience.

so everyone reckons i should not go for a cbr - (hmmmm, with such a response i'm better off actually listening to them!)

i suppose...... there was one 51reg nsr for £1800 that i saw, but as a 17yr old how much do u reckon i'd pay on insurance (3rd prty fire&theft)?

u know, i've come off of a 100cc couple of times (doin wet corners just a liiiiiiiitle too fast) so d'you think i've filled this yrs accident quota?

Go to https://www.clickquote.com and get a quote there, expect the real quote from them to be about £100 more but you can bring that down by ringing round different companies.

If you want to build up no claims then get a cg, or even c50 or something, then just before the policy runs out in a few years time change to a bigger bike so it looks like that is it.

A NSR is a better way to build up for a bigger bike because you'll get experience of riding a bike with a reasonably amount of power as well.

A lot of people have bought newish bikes on here, I think /almost/ everyone has regretted it as well.

What cover is that, you'd be best not going for fully comp and just getting third party fire and theft, I was insured third party only at 18 on th RS for just over £600.

£1500 for what? TPO/ TPFT/ FC?

You sould be able to get TPO for about £400-500, TPFT for about £700-900 and FC is £1k+

I got £600 TPFT for my 2001 NSR in a dodgy part of London when I was 18 and had no NCB. You just have to call around.

Because you lose lots of money buying new. Either when you sell it, or when you drop it.

Just the same as cars. Knock a fair percentage off the value purely by taking it out of the dealership carpark.
