I've always wanted to ride to Africa, which may I add sounds much more dramatic than it is. A bimble from Manchester to the south coast, ferry to Spain, ride from Bilbao to Gibraltar, then ferry to Morocco.

The only proper ride is down the length of Spain, and I'ld like to do it on as little tarmac as possible. I am led to believe that Spain it the best european country for off road riding, so it sounds like the best opportunity to get the most out of the DR.

Anyone done it before? Any experience of Spain off road would be a help.

Thanks.

Offroading in spain is a doddle. Just make sure you can speak some form of pigeon spanish, and that your bike can do at least 200 miles between fuel stops!!! (No im not kidding)

If you get stuck, things can turn bad relatively quickly. Even moreso in Morocco.

Ps. Stay away from the mountains in Morocco if you make it - theres a lot of dodgy stuff going on round there and overlanders are getting targetted.

Not being funny but I disagree with that. I've been to Morocco about a fortnight ago and I went on the mountain roads.

We did however avoid the Rift mountains as there's meant to be a lot of drug running going on there and over landers have had problems there.

Otherwise the other mountain roads are amazing and the people I met were very friendly and good salespeople haha. I had a truly brilliant time there and I would love to go back on an off road bike as it was quite bumpy on a CBR600RR.

Oh and Korn has done a write-up somewhere about his experience off-roading in Spain.

Spent a couple of weeks offroading in Spain and managed fine with just the one Spanish word; sí!! Razz

The length of Spain is surprisingly boring once you left the Pyrenees, its all flat ground covered with olive and oranges. Up in the mountains is good. ;D

Look out where you camp. Some genius decided to let bulls wander freely in some areas, they have distinctive cow bells on them so you can hear them. If you choose to camp somewhere with bullshit on the ground and where you can hear cow bells in the distance, it might not be the best place to sleep cos you'll wake up in the morning to the sound of cow bells getting closer which then changes to loud breathing. A nice friendly bull.

If you wanna go offroading in Spain head for the mountains. Remember to watch out for the edges though.
