very quick question, on a healthy engine, if the piston and barrel is removed, is it normal for the conrod to have some sideways movement? (it's only a very small amount of movement, but is there nontheless.)

sideways movement is ok, up and down movement is bad

Somewhere will be a list of tolerances for your specific crank which will include the Conrod end movement. On my RD, I think its 5mm. The webbings and bearings on some cranks come apart over time and there is a limit, if over that, then I presume it's crank rebuild time.

As per vincent's post, crank webs can spread and the thrust washers each side of the big end can wear. However it's vertical play which is the important thing to measure. Any at all and it's crank rebuild time. If this is ok I wouldn't worry too much about lateral play.
