PostPosted: 08:47 - 05 May 2008    Post subject: broke the key in Brake Disc Lock Reply with quote

This Saturday, nice and sunny Smile , I decided to go for a long ride and was really looking forward to it ….and then it happened all geared up and ready to go Very Happy ….. I broke the key off in my brake disc lock. Sad

I use an Oxford Omega disc lock and the key always felt a bit spongy and fragile to be honest. I know you have to be careful with those keys but stupidly it happened and the key just broke off.

I tried for about 2 hours to get the lock open, first tried to get the stuck piece out with some pliers but no luck. I was so desperate that I browsed the net and people apparently got a disk lock open with a screwdriver.
Well, it won’t do the trick for me. Ok, I am probably not suitable for a career change to a professional bike nicker but I really would like to get it open.

Could I have some advise please if any of you had a similar problem?

I’m wondering what would be cheaper, calling out a locksmith or getting a the front disc replaced.

Any suggestions are desperately welcome.

Could you not superglue the key together, push it into the lock and then turn it so you can get it open?

Get a hacksaw on it, not on the pin but on the body, its thicker but wont be as strong because the pin is hardened.

You could try a sledgehammer/lump hammer but you risk damaging the disk that way.

Cheers
John

I'd cut it off with an angle grinder. You'd have to go carefully and use an assistant to support the lock but it would be possible to get it off without causing any other damage.

Then depending on how new the disc lock is - I'd be contacting Oxford Products to complain about it.

How about freezing the lock with nitrogen on the bolt mechanism and just take a hammer and drift to it to collapse it all?

If you are desperate, you can ring a locksmith and then bill oxford for it Confused Seeing that the key is stuck in the mechanism so your lock's useless anyway.

Thanks for your input thus far.

Unfortunately superglueing the end of the broken key and tried to turn the lock was unsuccessful. I think I wasn't careful enough and then stupidly in my frustration tried a screwdriver which destroyed the lock probably for good.

Using a sledgehammer or a hacksaw I probably don't consider doing myself; might end up damaging the bike or myself for sure knowing my luck and clumsiness.

Anyone ever called a locksmith out? If so, how much do they normally charge?

At least £100 for a locksmith who will come out and use an angle grinder to remove the lock. On top of that they are unlikely to care less about damaging the disc, wheel, or forks. About the same price for a new brake disc.

Get yourself a junior hacksaw and a pack of blades and some cardboard. Stuff the cardboard between the lock and the disc, take the wheel off the bike, and sit there for a hour, if that, gently sawing away at the main body. Other than that how about taking the wheel to the local firestation and asking them if they will grind it off.

Personally I would remove the disc from the wheel but not everyone is willing or able.

Was going to suggest this. Then you have it for the future.

Also strongly agree with taking this back to Oxford - or more likely the shop that sold you it. I had the same with an Oxford car disc lock (key snapped off) and Halfrauds replaced it no questions and no receipt.

Even the cheapest locksmith is gonna have a call out charge atleast double the price of a new lock

Just cut it off. Then complain to oxford if it's not too old, though they micght just blame the failure on incorrect opperation

Just a word of warning though, if you've never used one before then I would refrain from buying one and attempting to cut this disc lock off yourself.

Its going to be a delicate task and unless you are used to handling an angle grinder you are likely to damage something like the brake disc or possibly lop one of your fingers off.

If you are unsure what you are doing get someone else to help. Thumbs Up

Or you could go to B and Q and get one for £10, you can use the money you saved to go towards a new brake disc after you lose control of the grinder and gouge a chunk out of it. Wink

I wouldn't bother, they're customer services are shite and don't want to know.

Hit it with a sledgehammer if you don't have an angle grinder to hand - the Oxford Titan couldn't stand hitting the forks on the trike.

Why not, cut away fromt he disc so if you slip theres no problem,
Just stick the plastic guard facing the disc and work it in the other way.

Or put something in between, the disc and lock and cut at bottom of the locking U peice, id use something pretty hard like a pirce of sheet metal that will take about 10 seconds to go through, so you have a few seconds to stop and save the disc.

Thanks for all your input. Found a garage who offered to do it for £20 for me as I am not really confident letting lose an angle grinder in my hands onto the bike.
So called my road side assistance cover company and they send someone out to my home address.
All good and well - it was a quite tough to get the bike onto the truck with only us two and the front wheel locked but we did alright I thought.

The shop took the disc lock off in minutes and I was ready to go.

Guess what........ strapping the bike onto the truck caused damage to the steering bar. He re-adjusted the strap at first as the grip seemed to slip off the bar and applied the strap a lot higher on steering bar. So now I can bring it back to the garage to get it fixed. Can't believe the steering bar can bend that easily.
