Basically was with the OH today and walked the dog down the local woods and saw trails or dirtbike tracks left in the mud and thought to myself, bet thats fun.
Any way, my uncle told me about him and my other uncle going into the same woods on trails bikes, but he had someone come to him with a shot gun and i dont know who owns the land but theres plenty of exits if i was asked to leave.

So the bike, i dont know if you can have certain bikes with daylight mot's and such and can i pack an exhaust as much as possible to quiet it down? 2t or 4t? Sorry if i'm being naive.

Thanks for info in advance.

You have to be very very careful where you ride. With recent changes in legislation and the powers police have to prosecute you and confiscate your bike, you must ensure that you are riding legal byways.

Have a look here....

Dam, looks like its harder than i thought, as the police an take my bike if its not legal for me to ride there so i would be taking a huge risk.
I'd have to find out where i could ride first and see if i can find more offroad riders who can take me to places i can ride.

Its like for every where really, you shouldn't ride there without permission but most green lanes are legal.

As for sound id go for a 4T with a quite exhaust. Even though i love 2T!!

Also try putting a thread on here see if there is any riders around your area that know of any legal places.

2006 P1, all green lanes are legal unless there's a TRO in place.

Best bet is to get yourself a local OS map and look for the byways on it, which look like this + - + - + - +

Going by what you say about someone coming to your uncle with a shotgun, it's not a byway.

You can get daylight only MOT's depending on the tester since they're a bit of a grey area. Can you pack an exhaust down, might be able to get a baffle to bolt into the end of it but your best bet is probably to make sure the MOT man doesn't mind loud cans.

Oh so where there is + - + - + - + on a map does that mean its a green lane??

Yes, but it is classed as a BOAT - Byway Open to All Traffic

Whilst we are on the topic, is it legal to ride off-roading across the moors and moorland ? Surely no shot gun friendly people own those lands ?

Don't want to sound like an old fart but don't do this. All it does is give ammo to the people dead set against us using legal lanes and there are plenty well represented people out there.

Stay legal and considerate so that we can carry on using these lanes into the future.

It's really easy... look at a map. If it's marked as a byway then it's a legal lane.
Look at the ends of the lane, if there's sign posts with arrows saying "Byway" then it's a legal lane.
You can also check with the access officer at the local council who'll be able to tell you about any TRO's currently in place. But if you use a bit of common sense it isn't hard to tell where you might not be welcomed.

From what the original poster describes it very very much sounds like it isn't a legal lane. Even if it is a legal lane, given the friendly farmer with his shotgun I reckon there might be better places to play.

About the ride anywhere comments, yes, but you need to use a bit of common sense. Riding around Salisbury Plain isn't legal, but as long as you stay away from houses, stay out of farmers fields and nature reserves, you're not going to be bothering anyone since the rest of the week the army drive their tanks around. Use a bit of common sense and you'll be fine.

streetmap.co.uk show byways. Thumbs Up

OS Landranger are the maps you want, big branches of Smiths sell them, bookshops have them, and OS sell them on their website. On all of my Landranger maps I've marked byways with green highlighter to make it easier to see where they are. Takes a bit of time for each map but makes it much easier when you're out somewhere wondering which direction to go next.

That's a bridleway. You can ride along Butthole Lane which is a byway and then it goes to bridleway, you can't go on bridleways. The green circles mean its part of the national cycle network so it wouldn't be a good place to go.

www.wetroads.co.uk is a useful site for finding interesting places near you.

Other than that, OS maps and a green highlighter is the way to go. Wink

Buy an OS map and look for -+-+-+-+-+-+-+

That is a Byway open to all traffic. There is nothing like that on the map snippet you posted, you'll need to go further afield...

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
