They do not test it on an MOT but it is against construction and use regulations not to have one.

Basically what I'm saying is: You can have an MOT and still not be road legal.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

It isn't a requirement for MOT - hence why my last MOT certificate for the RS50 shows 0 Miles. I hadn't finished remodeling the speedo when I had to take it for MOT.

However, it is compulsory to have one while riding on the road (and they're a handy piece of kit as well!).

I was with a friend who got pulled by police and he had no speedo.

They pulled some angry faces and remarked at the fact that he couldn't tell how fast he was actually going, but didn't end up doing anything due to the fact he 'wasn't' speeding. They pulled him for the fact that they didn't like his bike, it had recently been in a crash and he couldn't afford £200 on a speedo from Honda.

Surely if it was illegal to ride without one they would make it compulsory in the MOT? I'm pretty sure its the case that if you have one fitted it has to be working, and that KM/H clocks don't really fly over here and you need to sticker 'em.

I am not doubting you, I just have had a different experience and am not sure which way it floats anymore. What about green laners on converted off-road only bikes. Surely they didn't have to fit a speedo to be legal? Question

edit: Whoops, crappy coppers up here in Medway.. just read MarJay's post Embarassed

Hi

Speedo is compulsory (except on mopeds I think), but like quite a few legal requirements is not part of the MOT test.

All the best

What happens if your speedo goes while your out and you just keep correct seperation distances 'til you get home?

It's a genuine reasoning that could happen, but I assume they'd hear it all the time about 'yeah it happened earlier'

What about using a GPS unit like the 60csx as a speedo, would this get through a MOT?

You not read the above Confused

Pyro, if your speedo breaks I doubt that would be the one time a policeman i sitting in your pillion seat looking over your shoulder to see if its working Wink
If policeman stops you don't say a word, at that point an analogue speedo reading is correct ie zero Wink

Is a Mph speedo required? something tells me no, but maths at high speed can't be safe Laughing

Speed limit: 30
(58kph / 8 ) * 5 = Brake!

Hi

From memory construction and use wise the speedo must show mph and kmh (which technically makes some bikes which have mph only speedos illegal).

All the best
