Firstly, This is quite long and boring so turn away now if that doesent appeal to you.

Over a month ago i ordered a £170 sofa from argos, The money was taken from my account on the 7th of June,

Dident Hear anything from them for a week or two, so i rang up, got confirmation my order had been received and that someone would be in contact soon to arrange a time and date for delivery.

So some more time passed, i started emailing because the premium rate number costs too much, still assurances that someone would be in contact before the 2nd of Aug (Literally at the extreme end of their maximum 28 day waiting period),

To which i replied

Dear Helen,

In regards to your recent email I am very unhappy with the situation Argos has put myself and my partner in.

Payment for the sofa was extracted from my account well over a month ago on the understanding we would receive our Sofa within a 28 day period.

I am more than dissapointed with the less than satisfactory service I have encountered.

On both occasions that I contacted yourselves via the telephone, I was
informed someone would be in contact before the intial 28 day period
expired to arrange a suitable time and date for delivery.

At no point within the intitial 28 day period did argos take the initive to contact me to let me know of any information regarding my sofa.

Due to this inconvenience myself and my partner have suffered over a month with no sofa in our new home. If told about the lack of stock prior to this state of limbo we have been placed in, I could have sourced a sofa from elsewhere or chosen another model from your range.

I would like to accept your offer to choose an alternative sofa and have chosen "Lucy Regular Sofa - Blue.

640/0446". I realise this sofa is marginally more expensive than my original order but considering the circumstances and inconvenienced caused by Argos I feel this would be a fair compromise to a unsatisfactory situation.

Please advice us as soon as possible when I may eventually receive a sofa.

Thank You

I received this today

Quote:
Dear Mr xxxxxxx,

Subject: Order number xxxxxxx

Thank you for your e-mail regarding sofa.

I have looked into your query and I am sorry your original sofa has been discontinued. Catalogue number 640/0446 - Lucy Regular Sofa has a price difference from your original sofa we will waiver some of the price difference.

Please send a cheque, made payable to ?Argos Distributors?, a Postal Order or Argos Gift Vouchers/Gift Card for the value of £48.00 to this address:

Finance Department
Argos Direct
Acton Gate
Stafford
ST18 9AR

Please write your name, address, postcode, and your Order Number on the back of the cheque or on a covering letter. About 7 days after we receive your payment we will contact you to arrange a delivery date.

Should you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us at [email protected] or call us on 0845 640 2020.

Regards,

So basically they have had my money for well over a month, and now want me to pay more for a different sofa when this is their screw up? BTW they are essentially offering my £10 off for my troubles... Middle Finger

What are my options here, my first thought is to ring them tomorow and get a bit shitty, but what are my rights, considering I was not informed of the lack of sofa untill after their stated maximum 28 day period. Would i do well bounding round taking legal action, or should i just get a refund and accept that for the last month in my new home i have been sitting on the floor when i could have had a sofa. I dont really have 50 quid to be sending them for this other one.

Advice?

Pretty damn frustrating, although pretty typical. If they had accepted the deal of giving you the difference for the new one then that would have been a result.

But £10, tesco etc hand out this kind of discount like confetti, i'm sure argos/homebase (a massive group) could do better if they could be arsed.

Take your business elsewhere.

I lost patience with delivery services from large groups ages ago, another bonus from my getting a van, you can drive down to the store, pay for it, and wheel it out there and then then get it into your home at a time convenient to you, not have to take a day off work or miss the delivery etc etc.

Refund and go somewhere else.

Just get it in writing with the date, amount and last 4 of card, in case they fail to refund. THen you can get the card provider on the case for refund.
Also how did you pay?

Yeah I've got a bit of a bone with Argos atm. Bought a sideboard for the dining room, put it together and the doors don't stay closed. The hinges don't work in the configuration they use them, and I emailed / called to tell them that I would like the manufacturers to sort the issue. All along, they're not interested, can't do it, won't speak to anyone, haven't got a channel of communication with the supplier and so on. They've offered me £15, or a new item, but I pointed out that it's home delivery and assembly and they would have to pay me for the unit now, as it's taken time to receive and build it.

In all, I shouted at 12 people at their 'victim support' centre and am no wiser or better off.

I'm never shopping there for furniture EVER again, and I'd advise everyone to avoid them too. Utter, utter absocunts. Middle Finger

Sod the refund, get the new sofa at no additional cost or see them in the small claims court for theft of your money/breach of contract.

Claim (or say you will) for the hardship of sitting on unsuitable chairs due to the delay on top of the extra costs associated because you had to take all visitors to the pub for a comfy chair.

Scream & shout for satisfaction

Cheaper for them to waive the £50 difference than send a lawyer to defend the claim Thumbs Up

I'd say try get a refund and go elsewhere, to be honest I've always been wary of argos, just don't trust a place where you can't see what you are going to buy first.

We have had the same problems with Argos earlier in the year relating to bedroom furniture.

I eventually found out that if it says 'in stock' on the website, it actually means that Argos are able to order it from their suppliers - who are in Malaysia in our case. In other words they have absolutely NO CONTROL of their supply chain so their delivery quotes are complete fabrication.

We were happy to wait for the quoted 35 day delivery, but it was three months before it was sorted.

We also had to wait until the 35 day delivery time expired before being told it would be another 35 days.

I eventually insisted on a part delivery of what they had on our order as the whole upstairs of our house was fubar with clothes everywhere - we got a wardrobe, a bedside unit and the drawers for the chests...but no carcasses. Why they would have half a product in stock is beyond me.

We also had a faulty drawer runner. I borrwed from an incomplete unit and ordered a spare...to be told it would be 35days.

After speaking direct to a manager, I had 12 hinges through the letterbox the next day.

I went to town with the polite bollocking both on the phone and writing. I was seething but managed to keep it under control. We eventually got about 10% in Argos vouchers out of them. Not what I wanted, but a good enough result I guess.

The only reason we persevered was because they were the ONLY option for the colour of furniture we wanted - and we spent hours looking for an alternative.
