I've been a little bit confused about this for a while now. I keep reading about people 'counter steering' in various magazines and other websites.
I have wondered what exactly it involves? I was told about steering, or pushing the handlebars of the bike I'm riding the opposite direction to the corner I come up to while I was doing my CBT and throughout my DAS.
Is this the same thing? Or is there something else that experienced riders (technique or something) do that new riders aren't aware of?
If it assists in confident and good riding, I'd quite like to know.
Thanks

This https://www.survivalskills.clara.net/riding_skills_5.htm is the best explanation of it i have read, its something you do all the time but never think about, the only time i ever personally use it (and extremely rarely) is if i've misjudged a corner slightly and want to increase my lean angle, its very good for fast direction changes but in themselves are not a good idea unless you have no choice... have a look arround on that site because there is allot of useful advice on there and it helps clarify allot of questions you may have (it definitely did for me). |

easy way to describe it is....
ride down the motorway and then STEER the bike ie turn the bars a bit don't lean or anything. thats counter steering i thought. ____________________ F'it DO WHAT EVER MAKES YOU HAPPY!!!!! Even if it screws over everyone else :p

I discovered counter-steering a few months ago...
...and loved it ever since!!!
It amazed me how much quicker you can throw the bike from side to side. A quick tug on the bars and over it goes!!!
A great technique to practise
Does take confidence to knowingly turn the bars the opposite way from the corner you are going into though!!!

Thanks folks. I was right, its what I was told on my CBT and DAS and what I already do. I was just wondering if there was more to it that I didn't know about.
I just need more time on the bike. I wish the weather would get better!
Thanks again.

i find that its easier learning to countersteer on a pushbike. when i went out on my mountain bike i found i was doing it all the time as the steering is much lighter. Just apply similar rules to a motorbike and you'll be fine |

I finally got my bike fixed up yesterday so I went for a good ride. Thought I'd try this 'counter-steering' lark and realised that I've always done it anyway. ____________________ Current bike: VTR1000F Firestorm.
