I was just cycling ( a bit latter in the evening than usual) and came back down the side of the river at dusk. I saw a fluttering and then spent half an hour watching bats! I did not know that we had them this close to the center of Birmingham (Three miles from the Bullring). A bit further down the river I caught a chav having a BJ of a chavet. Mr. Green

Bat watching (and chav frightening) is now going to be a regular part of my evening. I like watching the rats but bats are even better.

We get them in our back garden Mr. Green

They're great for catching all the bugs around the fruit trees.

Would love to know what species they are and where they are coming from/roosting.

How far do they go from 'home'?

I would like to see one when its not coming towards me and giving me a heart attack at high speed in dark areas. I am pretty sure they are living in my attic also. Used to have such a sreaming match walking down the fairy glen being dive bombed by bats at night.

I have been bat watching with these people but all we did was heard them with ultrasonic amplifiers.
A lot of info on that sight.

They will always miss you, they fly through trees and catch tiny insects in the dark by sonar. You will be the size of the Titanic to them.

Yep true never hit by them just the zooming past at speed tends to scare me slightly in the pitch dark woods. If they live in your house can they do damage? wouldnt like to evict them if they are there.

They are all protected by law in the UK and I imagine they are in NI as well. You need a home office licence to handle them (I believe) I do not think they do damage as all they do is roost in your roof space ( a tiny bit of poo may get dropped) but they do not chew wires, enlarge holes and make nests.
If you think you have a problem contact those people in my link but I would look on bats as a blessing not a curse in my house.

I have bats in my loft - so to speak Embarassed

They are great and I even click at them early evening as they come out - they get quite close checking out if I'm a bug or not!!

Had an elderly one come inside last year and found it all tucked up behind bathroom door (Bat Rescue told me it was old - no idea how they could tell, but they are the experts!)

I know they are proctected just didnt want them eating wires but you said they didnt so thats good. Cold be still Mice I am not in a fit state to be climbling through roof spaces and crawl spaces to see. I dont mind them there, long as they keep themselves to themselves. Thumbs Up

Wali, if you really want a nice evening take a drink with you and go down to the engine pools in Earlswood, sit and watch the birds then come twilight the bats are out over the water chasing insects. Lovely down there.

We've got them in the roof space - one of the joys of a 200+ year old cottage.

Pretty cool when they come out dive bombing in the garden.

Have giant fruit eating bats in Brisbane - there is colony of many thousands of them in on an island on the river. They all come out at night (obviously), and eat the fruit from trees in people's gardens etc. Quality things - wingspan of 1m+, body of half that.

Awesome watching them flap about whilst sitting on my deck having a beer or four!

Having bats in your house is all rosy until your ceiling collapses from the weight of guano as happened to friends of ours.

Yeah bats are cool, we have 6 species in the woods where I live and a further 2 in an old hospital down the road. An acquaintance of mine made a PCB for a home-made bat detector, it's very simple and operates at 40Khz. If anyone is interested in a board drop me a PM, or e-mail via this site: Build a Simple Bat Detector (it's not a commercial venture, just an enjoyable hobby).

Thers's naff all loft space, literally only a joist thick - we have a raised ceiling. But, I wouldnt mind encouraging them to leave, but Mrs says no.

Wonder if they'd respond to the ultrasonic mouse / rat repellers? Twisted Evil
