To check the head bearings put weight on the back of the bike so the front wheel is raised off the ground and push the bars from full lock to full lock, they should move smoothly and freely on their own. Then hold the forks themselves and push up against the yoke with them and there should not be any play.

Same for the swingarm just raise the back wheel off the floors and check for play horizontally and vertically. It's difficult to explain.

Hi

As Scooby says, but a sign of steering head bearings in need of replacement / adjusting it a click you can feel when you brake.

Swinging arm bearings do not seem to go that often, but the bearings / bushes in the rear suspension linkages can be quite short lived.

All the best

Keith

Does that work with a side stand? I normally keep the wheel off the floor by lifting the frame and balancing it on the side stand.

Just a note:
A bit of play in the bearings doesn't mean they are gone. They may just need tightening slightly.
If the head bearings are loose, they will still move freely from side to side. With the front wheel off the ground (take fairing off and balance bike on wooden box under the engine), let the handlebars fall over to one side. They should swing smoothly but not too fast. If they fall over very fast and stop with a good click, they are too loose.
=> Need to tighten up by tightening the castle nut (under the yoke i think)
Tighten by tiny amounts until the bars swing nice and smooth.
Now check the bearing condition by turning the bars carefully and feeling how smooth they run. If u feel a "notch" (like a little tight or loose spot), even a slight one, then the bearing surface is pitted, and must be replaced. (make sure that it's not a pinched cable or something making it feel notchy though). A notch most commonly appears when the bars are centred, as this is the position in which we hit most potholes, kerbs, dogs, bricks, walls.
If the bars can be adjusted so that they turn smoothly as above, there should be zero vertical play.
Check for horizontal play. If there is any, the bearing are knackered no matter how smooth they feel.
