How much better is the new shape fazer (FZ6 - R6 Engine) over the older shaped fazer (thundercat) engine?

Would I be justified in spending the extra grand or so on a 2004 Fz6 or saving my money and getting a good 2003 old style??

thanks in advance

I looked heavily into getting one of these as my first back in 2005 and everyone I spoke to said the old bike was the better of the two.

That's not to say the newer model is crap though.

Performance v Practicality, in essence they're quite different bikes, the new one is much revvier and its sportier.

I would buy another Fz6 (new fazer)

I've heard that the newer fazer with the r6 engine isnt as good, as detuning the r6 engine didnt work as well as detuning the thundercat engine.

I ride the old model, (square lights) with the thundercat engine. Personally I would go for the old one as opposed to the revvier R6 engine. I know a few people who have changed Mk1 for a newer one and wish they hadn't bothered. The thundercat engine needs little maintenance and just seems to keep going. Mine has now done 55500 miles and, according to a yamaha dealer, the engine is still sound.

BTW I think my baby is beautiful, not ugly Razz

The R6 based engine will most probably use shims PITA to swap in and out come valve clearance time,

The old one IIRC uses rockers and are easily to adjust but need adjusting a tad more often than shimmed valves.

The new model has approx zero midrange making it feel gutless and peaky. The older one doesn't have this problem and is far more rideable.

Personally I'd go for an earlier model...but then I like flexibility and practicality over performance.

I've fitted a de-cat link pipe to two different fz6's and found a considerable difference in the midrange.

I don't disagree...but as standard from the factory the new model feels gutless. Difference is you've spent money making it go like it should've done from the factory...I wouldn't be prepared to do that and would rather buy an older one.
