They felt nice to me when I tried it out in the shop, but I'm a complete luddite when it comes to pushbikes, I'm pretty sure I couldn't tell the difference between that and an 80 quid full susser in a back to back test. (Unless I had it for a week, in which time I'd of probably killed it, LOL)

As long as you spend a decent-ish amount of money then there isnt such thing as a bad bike, just better deals/preferences. I prefer Shimano brakes over anything else I tried, though I'm not really an MTB rider and havent been for a few years now.

Specialized are still probably the best overall manufacturer around.

Still waiting for my voucher...

Toying with the idea of a Specialized Allez instead now!

Hmmm...

I would recommend getting cleats rather than standard pedals as you get a lot more power delivery. I use Shimano SPDs with Shimano cycling shoes. Once you get the hang of cleats ( it may take a few visits to A&E) you will never look back.

I agree with ariel.

I recommend pedals where the shoes lock into them. Cleats as he calls them.

Like toe clips but better.

You can get them for less than £30.

I got some pedals and shoes from aldi when they were on special.

Otherwise, I dont think I'd find much difference between a £80 bike and a £400 bike.

Its not like chinese motorbikes, an £80 bike will last just fine as long as you remember to lock it up with a U lock if you are off it longer than 5 seconds.

I had 2 bikes stolen when i lived in Liverpool. One after i had leant it against the wall while I was unlocking my front door. Little bugger went off with it.

I'd also suggest a road bike for the road rather than a mountain bike. Much lighter and faster.
