I'll be getting a 1080p TV soon and will need a new DVD player to go with it to make use of the HD, anyone got any recommendations for an upscaling player? Anything that I need to look out for when I get one?

Also, are the expensive HDMI cables [i]really[/] worth the extra? Especially when the setup isn't exactly going to be top notch anyway.

Woooooooooooooooah there!

Unnecessary. The TV upscales the DVD itself, otherwise you'd be looking at it as a tiny picture in the middle of the HD screen. An upscaling DVD player just upscales the picture before the TV, if the TV receives a SD picture then it just upscales it itself.

What Carvell said, or you could just buy a PS3, and enjoy region-free, future-proof Blu Ray lovelyness. Cool

It plays DVD's too.

I was under the impression that it was better to upscale at the player rather than at the TV end, is this not the case?

Whoa!

What the cocks are you all talking about?

Upscaling DVD players work, and are great, I have an Sony RDRHX870 and it's a fantastic piece of kit. Basically they use algorithms to convert a 480p image to a 1080p image, this means they generate more pixels using 'guesses'.

480p is crap, standard def is 576p, anyway, surely the processor in the tv works in precisely the same way....

I thought it was 576i? In which case 480p would be better?

I say that cause on the Wii TV settings 576i is normal and HDTV mode is in 480p.

Yes, but the DVD player does it much better Wink

(Doh, you're right 576 for PAL).

The upscaler on a DVD player (If you spend the money) will generally be much better than the TV's.

You spend £1,000 on a 37" TV and £60 on a DVD player then I suspect the TV would be better. Budget TV and top of the range DVD player and I should think the DVD player would be better.

exactly what he said get a ps3 does 1080p upscales dvd's and play blue ray i have a 1080i sharp 32inch had ps3 on it for a while the blueray blew me away and the dvd's looked top !
