Hi All

I have came across some information saying St Johns are doing a First Aid Course aimed at bikers.
Includes
* Bleeding.
* Casualty movements.
* Communication and hygiene.
* Cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
* Crash helmet removal.
* Emergencies in public.
* Head injury.
* Primary survey.
* Rescue breaths.
* Shock.
* Unconscious casualty.

https://www.sja.org.uk/sja/training-courses/courses-for-the-general-public/motorcyclists.aspx

Do you think it can be useful to attend being a biker?

Its a stripped down version of the First Aid at Work course.

If your work are willing to pay for you to do the full 4 day course, I'd go for that. It's valid for 3 years.

Though it doesn't cover helmet removal.

It's better than nothing, LH-ER5.

I did a St Johns one-day general first aid course a
while back and it certainly made me feel confident
that I'd be of some help. (Rather than just staring at
the accident victim and praying that the ambulance
wouldn't be too long.)

So if you've got the time, I'd say do it.

I did the St John course a few years back so mine has expired but it was absolutely invaluable (and enjoyable) and wouldn't think twice about retaking it - shame the nearest one to me is Shrewsbury, 55 miles away, would have thought there'd be something in Liverpool or Manchester

Just got mine, work paid for it. Very Happy

Seen helmet removal before, it's tricky, but a necessary evil if you want to check their breathing and maintain their airway.

The one day 'apointed person' course I've done did include that; but then the CEO's son was there who was doing it so he could do race-car tuition.

there well ran courses. and know a few people that have both taught and taken part, and they speak highly of it, so if you like the sound then go for it Thumbs Up

[rant]
But it really gripes me that they teach helmet removal! If anyone removes my helmet then i expect them to be fully prepared and have the equipment to provide full immobilisation and a full CNS examination, and be able to appreciate and recognise the MOIs involved and the complex A and P.
At the end of the day most injurys that can cause me to stop breathing while riding a bike is going to be catastrophic and a firstaider or "BikeAider" is going to be ineffective.
[/rant]

but as i say its a good course and i would recommend anyone who feels confident to learn first aid to do so Wink
