I remember reading somewhere Honda used them in a 4-stroke GP bike years ago in an attempt to beat the 2-strokes.

I believe there was a monocoque framed oval piston 500cc 4 stroke GP bike that honda fiddled with that was oval pistoned. I believe it was a triple. I have a feeling it was an NR500 or something...

In that case when I was about 14 a friend of mine had one, cant really remember the bike but I do remember it had oval pistons.

Hi

Apparently Triumph played with oval pistons in the 1920's. Honda played with them for years trying to make a 4 stroke that could compete against 2 strokes, then gave up and built the NSR 2 stroke race bikes. The NR500 was a race bike and never sold to the public. NR allegedly stood for Never Ready. Honda finally built the NR750 to make use of the technology.

None at all really.

What they do mean is that you can have a 4 cylinder engine which (with 2 plugs per cylinder) is effectively an 8 as far as bore and stroke go. Thus you land up with a short stroke engine without having a stupid bore size.

Basically it works because Honda needed a way to come out with a short stroke engine so they could rev the nuts off it and stand some small theoretical hope of making a 4 stroke keep up with a 2 stroke. Eventually they decided it was cheaper to build a 2 stroke and then get the rules changed to give 4 stroke a massive capacity advantage.
