Right, I'm 99% set on buying an Astra Estate with the non-turbo diesel. Cheap insurance, back seats that fold flat, etc.

Is there anything to watch out for with the Vauxhall nonturbo engine in these?

Never be going anywhere in a hurry.

I had a 1.8 non-turbo diesel Escort Estate, dear god that thing was slow.

I could sleep in the back of it tho Smile had to open the tailgate or curl up, but I could

Hence the flat back seats. It'll be good for camping and will double as a van too.

Vans will be quicker though, I would remove all the mirrors so you cant see the long line of cars behind you. Wink

Why specifically the non-turbo?

The turbo and non turbo will use the same fuel when developing the same power - in fact the turbo will probably be more efficient. Difference being that when you need the extra touch of power, it's there.
Insurance might be cheaper, but you'll be wishing you'd paid a bit more the first time you drive it.

The non turbo does use less fuel when driven sensibly or they did while new,we used a few turbo/non turbo's as taxi's back 10 years ago and the non turbo's did use less fuel although they were a lot slower. I used about the same amount of fuel driving a non turbo as a turbo on the weekends because it needed a lot more stick to get you there the only difference then were the repair bills with the non turbo's being a lot cheaper.

If you are looking at older models don't do it, they are horrible cars even with a turbo.
They are not possible to drive sensibly, it's flat out everywhere just to make slow progress. Handling is scary and they are really noisy.
No idea about new Astras.

Our company supplies some drivers with a company van rather than a car, they're mostly 1.7D Astra vans, some are turbos though. They're pretty much the same from opinions, other than obviously the turbo being quite a lot quicker off the mark, economy about the same.

I personally wouldn't touch a non turbo diesel engine of any kind, diesels need turbos, no exceptions.
