chain grease/lube

is there something you can get in a spray form that will lube up the chain? if so can you link me to it?

i dont really wanna be applying grease as its messy

You need to clean it every now & then too with paraffin or diesel.
In theory O ring chains don't need lubing - but they do need to be kept oily or greasy to prevent corrosion.

Mate, if the problem that you have is applying it - for the price of 2 WURTH dry lube cans, you can get this

I've got that fitted to my bike and it keeps my bike lubed ALL the time. Cheaper than scottoiler, better than loobman and it applies the oil to all sections of the chain. It's an absolute gem and ensures that my chain is always lubed, especially when it rains - flow rate of oil deposition can be controlled, and any sort of oil is cheap enough - a litre of 10W40 is about £1.60, and the bike uses about 1 syringefull each weak, which is virtually 10-40ml of oil each week. I'm not going back to aerosols ever again. I'm actually doing my chain good by riding the bike!

The applicator does apply the oil on the o rings. I've been pedantic enough to take a swab on the sections of chain and confirmed that they are adequately lubricated.

Oil's NOT really everywhere? The oil on the swingarm is due to me purging the system through to check flow rates and that gunky stuff is chain lube. Rusty chain was primarily my fault. I left the bike in a state when i was awaiting a new sump where it was left on its side, exposed to the open - chain side facing down on the ground.

THAT will explain the rust since it was clean as a whistle before hand.

But for 12 quid, the auto oiler isn't a bad shout and if you use your bike a lot, especially for commuting in the winter, it's certainly very valuable.

I was so impressed with Titz' recommendation, and the fact that he got his bike on their website that I bought one.

Ten mintues to fit, half an hour to fine tune, and working well so far, though I may have to adjust the nozzle as it's a bit of a drop to the chain from where I've placed it.

I'm using 20w50 mineral engine oil @£1.99/L from Wilko in it, I'll see how it goes and report back.

just ordered and hope it's better than a shitty scottoiler. The cable kept clogging up and it just doesn't like working. Will be stripping off to sell on i think. Ordered one of these for £13 you can't complain.

Salty21 asked me the same question earlier.

It depends on the visocosity of the oil. I expect my reservoir to last a 100 mile week (commute to and from uni) between fill ups. If i want to be conserving, i'd use a quarter turn, but seeing that it's been wet recently, I've used a whole turn on the tap. I don't mind refilling often, but it's better for the chain to be well lubed than being soaked in salt, then dried out at night... and eventually rusting.

When i first had it installed, i checked how long a fully opened tap will take to drain 20W50... it was about 3 or so hours. Like i said to salty, 1/4 to 1/2 turn will suffice for long commutes.

It's good stuff anyway because i don't have to worry about horrendous chain fling on my swingarm, undertray and hugger! At least oil is soluble with parrafin.

Oh, i forgot to mention, the length of the delivery tube DOES have an effect on how much oil you can have in your system, so if you have a long tube, you can probably expect a lot more than 100 miles! My tube's only like 6 inches so there's not a lot of oil that can be contained in the system.

Oh, i need to check if vegetable oil would be adequate if i'm out of lube at a mate's house and they don't happen to have any engine oil lying about?

Already tried the Loobman on a previous bike, although it worked well it was fiddly and looked rubbish.

I just use chain saw chain oil. Its around 3 quid from b&q and works a treat. Looks like normal oil but it's like syrup when its on the chain.

It tastes good too.
