So my girlfriend works for a phone insurance company, but place she is at, the staff are highly unproffessional and treat the office like a ghetto playground. Plus they are now saying as of the new year all staff will be required to switch from their current 5 day a week schedule to rotating shifts including saturdays...

I suggested apart from looking for a cushdy government admin job, why not look at car insurance? from my experience they are raking it in from us poor road users..

Any BCF'ers have experience within the insurance industry, specifically motors, whats the pay like? Advice?

Cheers

i've got a few friends who work in a local call centre selling insurance of all kinds, car, bike, home, life cover all that stuff

most say its just a job and pays the bills, a couple take it really seriously and have started up the career ladder, having worked in the past for bt, i should imagine that (if my experience is anything to go by) that in a call centre you would just be in a cubicle battering phone calls all day like a beast, but a smaller insurance company or a local broker would be a little more relaxed and more customer service focused rather than sales orientated

this will probably be the norm in any call centre scenario as (through experience) call centres employ a lot of younger staff as they are generally more motivated by the "peppiness" than us cynical elders.

as for pay, i would be pretty sure a basic of around 12-16k depending on location and a bonus structure in place to boost the income, obviously this suits the hard workers as their wages are increased by the bonus where as the dossers are happy to sit on the basic wage.

Cheers for the reply,

My girl is a hardworker, shes the one that pulls up all the slack in that office and the one that gets the bonuses, and shes on about that pay, 16.5k which is barely enough to live nowadays...

Trying to find her a job thats in the region of 20k, she prefers the admin side to the calls...

Secretary? PA?

pa's get paid quite well and is a good job if you other half is uber organised. better to start small i would think then move up in size of company/responsibility, as my dear old dad said to me its better to be on the bottom rung of a ladder you want to be on rather than half way up one you don't want to be on.

Personal lines insurance is just call centres, thats pretty much it, the same goes for claims.

Commercial insurance is much more relaxed as is working in a brokerage the only problem with going down the broker route is that you need to know a hell of a lot.

I worked for Saga for about a year, as a claims handler. Money was fairly rubbish (£12k+bonus, but rarely hit targets required for bonus), hence only worked there for a year, but the biggest thing that annoyed me was learning so much about insurance, you realise that "everyone's an expert". Third party is so frustrating, as you realise everyone's a liar, and the perfect driver Rolling Eyes Working on the Accidental Damage side, you realise how much a lot of companies rip off insurance companies, and Total Loss was annoying having to either rip people off, or explain that a 20 year old car was never worth £10k, and the insurance company is never going to pay £10k. The theft side looked like fun, but never got there.

Personally, I would never work on the claims side of insurance again.

Really Rolling Eyes
I've had an insurance broker sort out my insurance for years on the basis that they know the industry and can get the best deals.

This years house and contents came in at over £600.
A quick check on the internet and filling in a few quotes got that down to below £300 for actually a bit more cover than original quote.

When I queried it with them the reply was "well that's with a company we don't deal with" Brick Wall
Yet it appeared that they could get a quote from a company "in the same group", but not below £300.

So, and I say this with some regret, they'll not be getting my business this year.
If that broker doesn't smarten up their act I can see they'll be out of business too.
All this has done is strengthen my suspicion that insurance companies are like a cartel and it's all a bit of a scam.

Sorry but can't add anything else in reply to TheDon's query.

Different brokers get different deals with certain underwriters. Taking motor insurance as an example, there are only a relatively limited number of underwriters, but hundreds of brokers. Yet there's a few brokers that can consistently get better rates than most others with the same underwriters, presumably because they supply the most business or supply a 'statistically safe' stream of customers and get the best rates off the underwriters.

My car insurance is with a broker and underwritten by NIG, its about £350. Yet other brokers quoting me with NIG as the underwriters were returning premiums anywhere upto £1100.

Did anyone else think this thread was going to be about scamming insurance co's for payouts? How disappointed I was when I clicked on it. Sad
