luckily I was in my cage.

Crawling along at about 10mph, Woman behind drives straight into the back of me. Her Ka is a rightoff and my zafira isnt looking to good.

Police turned up asked if we had recovery, we both said yes and then they anounced because we were in roadworks (both cars were on the hard sholder and all lanes were open) that they would have to arrange recovery and we would have to arrange recover from the local garage.

Recovery turns up hoists up the car and starts to take me to the garage and then announces there is a £150 fee for the recovery and the rac cant take the car till that paid.

So I pay that, call the rac and they turn up, get my car on the back of there truck and tell me its going nowhere tonight, I ask why and im informed that they wont drop it off at a garage unless its signed for.

So I'm £150, dont know where my car is, and feel like ive been hit on the back of the head with a baseball bat.

Oh well at least I want on the bike. Shocked

Yeah its just annoying the way they do it, I could have called the RAC which would have cost nowt, I could have called a mate with his own recovery truck, and that would have only cost me beer money. But in there wisdom the police pick a recovery company that charges £150 to move my car 2 miles, and dont tell you the price until you are in a position that you have no choice but to pay it.

A lot of roadworks have signs saying " Free recovery in the case of breakdown".

Keep all the receipts. You'll be needing them when you claim it back off her insurance.

The whole baseball-bat thing. A rear-end shunt is one in which you genuinely do stand a good chance of sustaining whiplash.

If you can't move your head in the morning, get yourself off down the quacks.

EDIT: What you need to do ASAP is write yourself a mini report on everything that happened. Who said what, when, where, what the weather was like, who the recovery company was, sketch of the scene, map reference. As much as you can remember.

These things have a nasty habit of dragging on for months. You will have forgotten essential details by then unless you write them down now.

Be prepared for the other party to lie through their teeth. By the time she's got home and spoken to her husband then filled in the claim form, you'll have reversed the wrong way up the motorway into her at high speed while high on drugs.

I second this sentiment. My dad's car was once hit by a driver who pulled out of a junction into traffic and straight into the back of his car. When the claims came through, the other driver had said to his insurance company that my dad reversed out of the traffic, into the side road and hit him Rolling Eyes Some people need whacking with an actual baseball bat.

Just out of curiosity, what happens if you do not have £150 but are in the AA.

Not everyone has a spare £150. Took me all year and in excess of 600 hours overtime to save up for my spending spree at the NEC.

Oh, i hope you have a decent solicitor. PM me as I know a good one that I used for a minor rear end over summer.

I would suspect that they may even write that car off considering the potential damage to the floor pan.

Why should you be at an inconvenience and out of pocket due to the idiocy of someone else?

Hope everything else gets sorted quickly.

The neck thing, get it looked at, not as a personal injury claim thingy, but to make sure that you ARE ok.

With the AA you pay for mechanical breakdown insurance and when you crash it's not a breakdown.

They will send a truck to recover you but will also send you the bill, which you pass on to the insurance company. If you haven't got the money to release your car I would think the insurance would pay directly because it also costs them to store it at the recovery company.

They take the car into their compound and start billing you for storage too!

the RAC do cover you in the event of a crash, on bike or in a car, the only issue is if lifting equipment is needed then you get billed extra.

Until now, drivers without rescue service cover have paid a flat fee of £105 to have their broken-down cars towed away.

Ive just been reading this dailyfail article and its seems the costs have just gone up for getting towed off the motorway if you dont have cover, however it seems in this case the copper asked if we had cover and then just ignored it claiming that they had to get us removed. Can anyone else smell a backhander?

RAC have always picked me up no matter what, can't fault them.

Broken down several times...
Once when I crashed...
And once when I was 450 miles from home and the cambelt snapped (cage)

I think I'd be writing a letter of complaint to whom whoever it would concern regarding the Police's insistence on recovery, especially seeing as they asked if you had recovery and you both said yes.
