Dont say a serving tray it heats up on that to and switches off. I have bought 3 of these stupid cooling trays and they are all broken now. One was a replacement for a broken one I got anyway. My lap top is being wreaked here as its over heating. Its already on a tray and has stilts the fans just stopped working on the cooling tray.

Got them off ebay Rolling Eyes first one was the neon one that seems to be popular but the usb lead was to short and finally it snapped at the conection which couldnt be fixed so I got a different make with a longer lead and had to be sent a second one as the fans just stop working and make a terrible noise before braeking down.

I do need one for my molten lava hot crappy lap top that dosnt like to work without one.

So if you have one what make is it? how long is the lead? any surgestions on the make, need one with a good strong fan on it etc

I looked on ebay again and they only seem to have the same 2 I had there or similar ones which i dont want to waste my money on. I dont care what price as I seem to have gotten what I paid for on the last ones.

I use a small bit of wood about the size of a zippo lighter and place that under the back of the laptop on its side, that help the air get underneath the laptop.

Not ideal but it raises the laptop enuff for the fan to do its job by keeping the intake clear.

P.S. what laptop make and model do you have? On my dell i use a prog called The Dell Inspiron/Latitude/Precision fan control utility I8kfanGUI

https://www.diefer.de/i8kfan/index.html

It gives me the option to have the fan on fullspeed all the time Very Happy

No I tried all that sitting up stuff , did it with books and it still over heats. So I need a fan. The middle of it heats like lava and the fans are under it. Stupid bloody lap top.

Its an acer aspire. I wonder do I have that fan thing in mine. Anyone know?

Stupid question but they look like they are for pc's not lap tops??

I found this thread on another forum also, I aint the only one with an over heating acer.
https://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/laptop-support/107572-acer-aspire-5672wlmi-fan-control.html

Different model but same problem. Think they are all like that. They seem to reccomend a cooling fan also. Have to look at my settings but my fans area alwasys on anyway. Coolog tray is working again but not for long. Rolling Eyes

I just sit my Acer on a corrugated lid from a plastic box. It's always run hot but never amounted to anything, just make sure you don't block the vents and intakes if you've got it on your knee.

What's the CPU usage like? Are you running any process heavy applications in the background to make it overheat?

We get loads of the Aspires coming into my shop. The problem is how poorly directed the heat pipes on the bottom are, coupled with the fact they use really bad thermal grease.

If you have the knowledge take the thing apart, give the fan a clean and put some Arctic Silver 5 on the processor and gpu. That way you won't have to waste money on another cooling thing just for it to break.

On the other hand Antec do a really good laptop cooler which uses 1 USB port and does the job well. For £20 you can't go wrong Thumbs Up

If it is only a few months old send it back! Laptops shouldn't over heat. My Macbook does it fine and you should the lack of venting on it.

On a un-modded laptop that has reasonable airflow it shouldn't overheat.

I took it back when the charger broke under warrently and I asked them what was it over heating for and they said it was the same as most acer lap tops especially the one I have and nothing could be done about it apart from the cooling fan. Confused

My dad has a new sony viro and it dosnt over heat or even get hot. But it was twice the price of mine.

Don't get one of those phase change material matts, they are rubbish!

I got myself one of these antec coolers

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Antec-NOTEBOOK-COOLER-Notebook-Cooler/dp/B0000BVYTV/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1231715976&sr=8-1

There's the amazon link.

I've got an Asus A8JS - basically Intel Core 2 7200 (2ghz), 2gb ram, geforce go7700 512 mb all in a 14" package so it gets a tad hot - GPU often running at 90 degrees with CPU at 80 when playing games or rendering large 3D images.

I bought the laptop cooler and it brought temperatures down to 70 for the GPU and 60ish for the CPU under the same sort of loads. It's very effective at cooling the laptop down and the heat transfer surface is very efficient. I think the fan bearings have gone though because it's starting to make a lot of noise, but that's besides the point - i listen to a LOT of loud music anyway.

If you have a 17" laptop, i'd avoid because it's not THAT large. Perfect for 15" and under though. Avoid acrylic imitations and cheapos from ebay, i know they don't work!

Dude, did u read what it said?

Quote:

SpeedFan is a program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info and show hard disk temperatures. SpeedFan supports SCSI disks too. SpeedFan can even change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature).

I have used it on desktops and laptops.

Attack it with the brush attachment of a hoover, there is bound to be shead loads of dust cloggin it up. I wondered why my old gaming laptop always overheated then I stripped it down and pulled half a carpet out of the graphics gard heatsink Laughing seriously the dust was solid and about 3mm thick. A thin coating of AS5 is always a step in the right direction.
