Everybody thinks that, everybody thinks its cos it *might* look like a little toad sticking its head out of a "hole" in the yorkshire batter. But in fact, its not.

It is actually "t'er tinngk der t'er hawl gbnk"

It comes from about the 16th century when a drunken husband and goode wiffe returned from the ale house and he wanted a two course (main and sweet) supper. She could not be bothered and tried to make a sausage pancake, attempting to kill two birds with one stone. He Toe'd her in the hole, the name stuck. As did his toe.

As a very old person I should know a lot about obsolete food like this and boiled puddings.
However I have never seen a hole toad but I thought it was just some sausages stuck in mashed potatoes like "Dennis the Menace" has for dinner. WTF is the batter about?

You have to use bank breaking sausages. Those cheap ones just don't cut it. They make is too wet/fatty. And thick onion gravy smothering it. Some peas on the side to add a bit of green.
