We are looking for a new car to replace the tired old '93 106.

We have been looking at Clio's, and infact i'm going to look at one today. Problem is - theres mould over the rear passanger seat, which i think could be related to a leaky window or sunroof (which appears to be a common problem, without an easy fix).

Even though the other half is set on a clio, i believe shes going to have to widen her search.

Our criteria is:

power steering
5 gears
5 doors
hatchback - smaller the better
up to 65k miles
low capacity, no more than a 1.4.

and all on a budget of £2.5k

Thanks all, Nick

For that money, look at Golfs.

What about a Polo?

Alternatively, you could probably get a nice Yaris for that money.

If you are looking at a max of 1.4, don't look at a Golf.

99-02 Fiesta Ghia? Nice cars they are. Power Steering, A/C, Heated "quickclear" Windscreen, Heated/Electric mirrors. Quite roomy, though the back can be a bit cramped. The 1.25 Zetec S engine is a nippy little thing as well. Just don't get the 1.3. Smile

Here is a 1.25 right on budget and only 38,000 miles.

I've seen some Honda Jazz's* on Autotrader for around 2.5k. Very very good little motors, really quite good to drive and an utter shedload of space inside (thanks to them fancy folding seats). Tax and insurance are dirt cheap and even though I used to thrash the one I drove, it refused to dip below 32-37mpg!
Fully recommend them!! Thumbs Up

*how do you say jazz as a plural???

depends what you want from a car- the Jazz is a good car but if you look at the performance figures it is very slow off the line!

True, but if you're looking at small hatchbacks around and under 1.4 then there isn't a lot that will be all that impressive off the line.

TBH the Jazz is a Vtec and has good power figures for it's size anyway. Compared to a 206 1.4 of a similar age it is a rocketship though Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Agreed.

Same with the Yaris, as it has a VVTi engine. Puts out about 85hp which isn't bad at all for a 1.3.

The Polo I've got is only 60hp, it's the 8v 1.4. However you will be able to get one of the more recent (2001+) 16 valve models for that money, which put out close to 100hp!

Honda Jazz 1.4 figures:

Engine Size 1339 cc
Cylinders 4
0-60 mph 14.0 s
Power Output 81 bhp
Torque 119 Nm 88 lb-ft
Top Speed 99 mph

Whereas:

Fiesta 1.4 zetec:

Engine Size 1388 cc
Cylinders 4
0-60 mph 11.0 s
Power Output 88 bhp
Valves 16
Torque 125 Nm
Top Speed 110 mph

Also the Fiesta handles very nicely and is great fun to drive (for a shopping trolley)

As a Fiesta owner, I'd advise caution buying one. They're great cars but they're also quite disposable. Mk4 and Mk5s are getting a bit rattly by now, anything over 8 years old will have lots of rust underneath e.g. exhaust, sump, rear brake lines etc (sound bodywork though unless it's been badly looked after).

I should expect a Jazz for the same price will be the more dependable choice.

Given that Nick.H has also specified a small maximum engine size performance probably isn't the be-all and end-all. And 0-60 times certainly aren't (apart from anything, you'll probably find that the Fiesta changes into 3rd after 60mph, and the Jazz probably needs a change before). Most small hatches will get to 30mph (much more realistic) in around the same time.

If someone is buying a car that is les then 1.4 I don't think 0-60 times are a great concern. Insurance, tax and mpg are probably of more interest to them.

She would love a new shape swift, aswell as a new shape mini, but thats seems it would require doubling the budget.

Its her car and it seems shes set on a clio. What freshAl has posted is spot on for what were looking for, so were going to have a look tomorrow.

I'm considering a newer model supermini car myself, but I like reliability, so will probably opt for a newer mkII Micra or a Toyota Yaris...

Hey, I have literally scoured the entire internet in my quest to find the perfect hatchback for you, and I came back with only one true result. A perfect balance in a car, it's quick, well handling, it has an airbag so that means it's as safe as a Volvo and it weighs little so returns 70 mpg in town and more on a run. With a not unreasonable £1200 reserve* this car is positively a bargain.

*I know this because the car might be mine.
