I'm fairly sure the Sky box needs a filter too?

He's using a phone line splitter after the filter for both the phone and sky to plug into.

In short, yes your diagram is correct and should work fine. Maybe your splitter is faulty.
Do you have any other telephones in the house, maybe on an extension lead somewhere else? Telephone lines have a maximum REN limit and each device connected has a REN value. BT Lines have a REN of 4 and most standard phones require 1 REN but some devices could need more.

Basically, the effect of going over the REN value means there's not enough current to cause your phone to ring.

With it all connected, use your mobile phone to ring your landline. Even if the landline doesn't actually ring, pick it up and see if the call connected as the call should still work.

Another way you could check is, rather than unplugging the Sky Box and ringing the phone, unplug the DSL modem instead, leaving the filter and splitter in place. If that works, then chances are you just happen to have too many devices on the line.

The adsl side does not need to be filtered, its just the phones that need a filter.

What you have done should work.

If its not then i would add a seperate filter to the sky box and phone.

Adsl side does not need to be filtered, only phone's. So you could (cough) hard wire the router to the back of the BT master socket Wink

WTF are you on about iooi? The whole reason for having a filter is because he is running ADSL. You split the phone line with a filter for the telephone AND the broadband. That diagram is technically correct. I don't know wtf you are on about sonny jim.

I would've thought you've got a noiseless line from the socket to the first filter, then a noisy line going to the splitter as the sky box and phone are interfering with each other hence needing another filter.

But I may be totally wrong.

What he means is generally you don't need a filtered connection to your router/modem. The filter only splits the signal on the telephone side of the connection. The broadband side is merely a pass through connection.

You should really learn what you are talking about before typing.

Erm, the ADSL modem/router doesn't need to be filtered, so WTF are you on about?

Your layout is fine. Read this.

Time you learnt then.....

If you DO NOT have any phone's or fax or sky boxes you DO NOT need to have any filters on the line.
My router is running on a un filtered line straight out of the rear of master phone box Embarassed This is split and the phone run of one side the router off the other. Each phone in the house is then filtered.

The filters are purely to stop the adsl signal from affecting the phone calls.

Are the filters for the phone basically low pass filters? I guess they allow everything through to the phone if it is 4KHz?

Yes they are low pass analog filters.

I don't see what the argument is about filters here, not really relevant to the question. Yes it's true that the ADSL signal itself itself does not require filtering, but going by the diagram. Everything on the "Right side" of that filter is filtered, no matter how many additional phones/sky boxes/extension leads are added boyond that point, no more filters are required. The only way more filters would be needed there would be if the original filter wasn't there and instead was placed after the splitter but then both the sky box and the telephone would need their own filters. That would be a pretty messy way to do it.

Filters are not only there for your phones also. If you have a master socket with just an ADSL modem connected, then no filters are required. But as soon as you put a phone into the mix a filter is needed, not just to prevent interference on the phone line, but the phone can also interfere with your ADSL connection.

Thats also a pretty messy setup, i mean yeah it will work fine, but there are better ways. Assuming you have the current standard master socket (NTE5) with removable face plate, the best bet is to get a filtered faceplate. It directly replaces the faceplate of the master socket and has 2 connectors on the front, one for your ADSL and one filtered telephone. Everything plugged into the telephone side is filtered.
Then on the back side of the face plate has the standard IDC connectors used for wiring in your extensions, but these are also filtered.

Using this means you need no actual standard filters anywhere else in the house.

Back to the original post though, as I mentioned before. Your diagram is perfect, there is no other way to wire that up correctly (without using different parts I mean) so I'd start looking at other things that could be the problem.
