Can't jump start

Hi guys,

after leaving the bike on the drive for a week when i was ill, came back to it yesterday and the battery is dead. Took battery out and charged for a couple of hours, put it back in and closed the bike back up. Well it now has enough charge to work the alarm and the lights and everything but wont turn over.

Tried bump starting it on my street (a bit of a hill) but to no avail. Finally resorted to jumping if with my 106 battery, but when it was all connected up, still wouldnt turn over...

Run out of ideas, can any one help?

BTW its the Suzuki SV650s 02 reg

Still sounds like there isn't enough power to turn the engine over. was the car running when you tried jump starting it?

No the engine wasn't running, was reading a couple of other forums that had warned against it.

Flat battery caused the alarm to lock the immobiliser.

Try resetting the alarm.

If jumping via a car battery, DO NOT have the car engine running, its a good way to fry stuff.
If its not cranking then it could be solenoid stuck, or even starter motor.
But if it won't bump, i would say its alarm related.

Just went to the bike and put the alarm in "service mode" as it advises in the manual. Then un-covered the battery and attached jumper cable; - (black) to - (black) on car battery. + (red) to + (red) on car. Then tried the starter, something different happend. There was a buzzing coming from the starter relay (little box near tank) and the rev and speedo jumped up depending how long i held the start button in...

disconnected jumper leads and tried on its own power, same deal.

Have I managed to screw up my bikes electrical system?

YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE THE DONOR VEHICLE ENGINE RUNNING JUST OFF IDLE WHEN JUMP STARTING.
tHE RISK OF DRAINING BOTH BATTERIES IS ELIMINATED AND YOU WILL ALWAYS STILL HAVE ONE RUNNING TO RECHARGE.
YOU COULD REMOVE/DISCONNECT THE DUFF BATTERY AND TRY STARTING AGAIN.
THE DUFF ONE MAY BE PULLING THE ENERGY OUT OF THE JUMP.
THE START RELAY COULD BE GUBBED.

It sounds like its only your battery that is knackered.

My Varadero had the same sounding problem. Thought I had done all sorts of things to it. Put a new battery in and everything was fine.

well there's no harm jumping off a car with the engine running unless you're doing something stupid or there's a problem, but if the electrical system was drawing more current due to a short or whatever the car battery would probably fry something anyway.

A completely gubbed battery shouldn't matter if the jump leads are still connected to the car and it's essentially the battery, feck, you don't even need a battery in the bike to get it running from a car battery.

The "buzzzzz" and rev counter flicker would just mean not enough kick to to crank her over.. you sure your jump leads are ok? and have a good connection to the positive and ground on the bike?

as per Kevs post ...

sounds like you're either using poor leads or have crap connections when you fitted them ...

you'd be surprised at the amount of times i've had folks say, "i've already tried jumpstarting it"...

then ask why it started when i jumped thier car using my leads ...

i just ask them to show me thiers ...

then show mine to them ...

my jump leads make thiers look like the headphone leads on a sony walkman, which means there is minimal resistance to the current drawn/required thru them, most leads that folks have start warming up after 5-10 seconds of heavy cranking...

i did get mine when i was working on hgv's tho and used them for jumping 24volts with massive current requirements

Cheers for all your help guys, it was the battery. Re-placed with a new one and the bike feels great to ride.

Will be getting some better jump cables, as the ones I have are pretty rubbish.
